With so many extracurricular activities put on hold due to the pandemic have you been looking for a way to burn off some child energy but also have them learn a skill?  What about Martial Arts for Kids?  We have recently been able to try out Family Mixed Martial Arts Videos and their program Family Mixed Martial Arts Videos Preschool Mixed Martial Arts in our homeschool as part of the Homeschool Review Crew.

This program is geared towards younger children to help them develop balance, coordination, and work on their gross motor skills.  That said, it is also great for older children and even adults too.

About Martial Arts for Kids

While using martial arts for kids, you get the entire program in videos.  It’s all online but your child can get certification in the course once it’s completed.   With this program, you’re going to help improve your child’s overall physical fitness but also their self-confidence which is equally as important.

It starts out with letting you meet the instructor who is going to be your guide through the course.  The lessons are taught by one person(a woman) and her helper who happens to be a school-aged boy.  My kids liked seeing a child on the screen because it gave them confidence that they could do this too.

The Course

When we began our review of this course it was broken up into lessons but then each lesson was broken up into several little sub lessons that were very short.

Martial Arts for Kids

As you can see from the course structure above there were six segments in each lesson broken down into things like the character of the day and specific techniques.  While this was fun it was also a lot of clicks and wait for the lesson to continue.

That is shown a bit in the screenshot above where you can see all of the different parts of that lesson.  In the last week or so they have been working to make each lesson just one video but that video does still have timestamps so that you can still go to certain sections to work on the new skill but also so you can watch the whole video at once without having to click a new link every minute or so.

This is a mastery-based program so you do need to do the lessons in order.  It’s not important how fast you move through the lessons but that each concept is mastered before you move on so that you can actually do the lessons after it.

There are some materials that are required for this course, but most of them are going to be things you have at home already.  Or if you’re like us and may not have some they are easy to replace with something that you do have on hand.

Our Thoughts on Martial Arts for Kids

This has been a fun program for my kids.  They have enjoyed getting to learn new moves.  Prior to all the upheaval in the world, we took dance classes at a studio.  The kids loved doing their acro, ballet, and tap.  But the boys always wanted to do some martial arts too.

Fast forward to now.  This is supposed to be for kids in preschool but older kids can use it as well.  It’s actually a lot more fun when you have more than one child doing this as they can do it together and practice the skills they are learning.

Participant

Our main participant in this course is my four-year-old son.  He’s quite the ball of energy and this has been really good for him when it’s cold and rainy outside so he can’t run around.  Somedays he has his friend here who we babysit who does the course with him.  It’s really cute to watch two four-year-olds do these routines.

Otherwise, he uses this with one of his older brothers.  All of the older brothers like to watch with him and since there are four boys total in our house it works out well that each will have a partner.  I would say my girls do it too but they’re not consistent.  Sometimes they might participate and others they don’t.  They would much rather be doing ballet or acro.

I really like that it’s a faith-based program and a character trait is worked on in each lesson.  I think that it is important to do that and help bring character training into each lesson in school and martial arts is no exception in my book.

We really have been enjoying this program and plan on continuing it and finishing the whole course.
