college readiness

Do you have a high school student? Does college readiness ever cross your mind in conjunction with your student?  It does with mine as I’m about to graduate as my first student.  Skills 4 Students, LLC has a product for us to help prepare students for college.  Success Skills for Christian Students Video Course and Book Bundle include online components and a physical book for your student.

The online components are part of a video course.  Within the video course there are video lessons, an ebook download, an application workbook download, a Bible study guide download, a quick start student portfolio, audio downloads (mp3) of the videos, and slides.

About the Curriculum

We received access to the complete online course and physical book.  The physical book came to our home quickly and is a paperback book.  I love that we have a physical book as part of this course instead of just downloads.

The course is for the student.  It is designed for them to be able to work through it on their own.  Because of this it really does not have much for the parent to do besides offer support as needed.  The course is a full program and can be given credits for the student as a high school course.  I believe it can count as a full-hour credit for their transcripts.

Everything you need to do the course is available online and through the book, you receive in the mail.  The workbook should be downloaded and then printed off.  I think this is the easiest way to use that portion.

There is a welcome email as soon as you log in to the website that shows you how to use the course plus more.  Please don’t skip that if you’re going to use this.  I watched it with my student as I felt it was important for both of us to know how the program was going to work and what we would need to do.

After that, it’s a really simple program to use.  There are video lessons with spots to download the slides or worksheets for each video.

Our Thoughts

As a parent of lots of children, I find that the early years of homeschooling are the most labor-intensive for me.  Once they hit upper elementary I really try to get them to “own” their schoolwork, or be in charge of more of it.  Sometimes that means that they have to cram at the end of the week and do all of one subject in a day, but they’re learning to take responsibility for themselves.

Often when people ask me what the most important thing is that I can teach my children they’re surprised by my answer.  I think they’re thinking I’ll say calculus, or biology, or something.  But what I say is to teach your child how to learn and to love to learn.  If you can teach them that, then they’ve got it made.

This is how Skills for Students, LLC comes in.  Their program, Success Skills for Christian Students Video Course and Book Bundle comes in.  They are teaching what they call Soft Skills.  Soft skills make up 75% of career success and it’s something that you can’t really find a lot of in today’s world.

What are soft skills?

They are those skills that help you to learn how to deal with other people and also with yourself.

I love that this program puts Christ front and center.  He’s the first thing in the program and throughout the program as well.  After Christ, it’s learning how to know yourself.  Now, don’t think I’m going off the deep end here with a bit of woo-woo stuff.  We’re talking about knowing your strengths and weaknesses.  This is something we all should know about ourselves and how to help ourselves overcome or work with them. Other things you’ll learn about in the program are critical thinking skills, accountability, and finding a mentor to help you on your journey.

Something I really liked about the program is that it has lots of different ways that it teaches.  You can listen to the lessons in an audio format, or watch them in a video.  Plus there is the physical book to read(also an ebook version if you want that) plus you can print off the workbook pages to do as well.  It appeals to all learning types.

I give this program two thumbs up.  It’s just what you didn’t know you needed to help prepare your student for that transition from homeschooling to being in college.  While I’ve tried to have my children be more accountable for their schoolwork in the end I am there making sure it gets done.  I really liked what I saw in this program and the progress I saw my daughter make.
