Where Courage Calls by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan #bookreview

About the book: Her courage and her heart will be tested in ways she never expected . . .

Beth Thatcher has spent her entire life in the safe, comfortable world of her family, her friends, and the social outings her father’s wealth provides. But Beth is about to leave it all behind to accept a teaching position in the rugged foothills of western Canada. Inspired by her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years ago, and gently encouraged by her father, Beth resolves to put her trust in God and bravely face any challenge that comes her way.

But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she’d feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don’t even speak English. There isn’t even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth’s heart is torn between two young men—both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.

Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she’s had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

My thoughts:  Okay I have to start by saying I have read everything that Janette Oke has ever written.  Period.  Everything.  I love her books.  So, of course I had to read this one too.  I was not disappointed in the least.  I do have to say that some things were a bit confusing because I had read her original Canadian Mountie series and so the two Beth’s was rattling my brain for a while.  I would love to see a sequel to this book!  I also feel I should say that I do not have television and I have NOT seen the Hallmark movies.  I normally do not advocate watching movies of books unless you have read the book first and can compare and contrast the two.   Now back to this masterpiece.  Yeap I still love everything that Janette Oke has ever written.  That pretty much sums it up!  I fell in love with Beth at the very beginning.  She’s such a likeable character.  I wanted to throttle Edward several times thoughout the book.  And Jarrick. . . well let’s just say that is probably one of the most perfect Mounties out there.  I really want to get to the next book(hint hint) and see what happens.  Obviously, little sister Julie is going to be disappointed in her quest for a certain man, but I personally am seeing her being set up with one Mr Philip.  Maybe I’m the only one here, but that would make me smile!  So definitely read this book so you can see if the little boy dies from the illegal hooch or if the bootlegger is caught or if Beth falls in love or so many other things!
