Lone Star Learning -Target the Question Review #hsreview

I was introduced to a new company recently called Lone Star Learning.  I hadn’t heard of them before which of course is nothing new as I’m still fairly new to homeschooling(only in our 3rd year) and haven’t really delved into a lot of upper curriculums or online things.  This program is unique as it was developed by teachers for teachers to use.  Within Lone Star Learning you can find topics from Math, Science, and Reading.  Grade levels include Primary through 8th grade.

I received the online Target the Question.  For this program we received the 1st grade set.  You are provided with printables as well as the online.  Online each week you get a word problem.  This word problem has extra information that your child has no need for as well as the information needed.  Then each day a new question is asked.  For a one year subscription to the online Target the Question in English for 1st grade, the cost is $59.99.  You can also get a free trial just to see if this might be something you’re interested in.  Target the Question is geared for kids grades 1-7.  Each grade of course has their own separate program.

My oldest who is in first grade used this program.  She was a little upset that she did not have a spot on the program to put the answer in and have it tell her if she was correct or not.  We worked around this by having a notebook that she could have a page per week and place her answers and any scratch work on it.  It is recommended to use for 10-15 minutes per day, but I found that it didn’t even take her that long for the daily questions.  In fact, she normally wanted to do a whole weeks worth of questions at once!  This didn’t surprise me as she does this with her normal school workbooks as well.

This program also does have where you can print off small versions of the digital program for your child to be able to physically hold and look at if needed.  I think this would be helpful if you had a large classroom of kids or if you were using this with more than one child.  We did make use of some of the other printables which include the teacher’s notes(answer key) as well as a the worksheet type pages that your child can do their problem solving on and write their answers.   We decided that the worksheet pages weren’t working for us and I bought a journal for my daughter to use.  She really liked having a book that was all her own to write her answers and work in.

Lone Star Learning did also offer other programs up for review with the TOS Crew.  Make sure to check out the Crew blogpost to see reviews of other grades for Target the Question and the other programs such as the review cards for Greek/Latin and Science!
