As Simple as 1-2-3

Everything needed to structure and teach an effective art program for grades one to three is made simple for the home-school parent or teacher.

This step-by-step process for teaching art is perfect for home-school teachers or parents with limited art skills or time to create their own programs. This system of insight, responses to judgments, ideas, and feelings aligns with public school and state visual arts requirements.

Teaching Art in the Primary Grades is designed to foster a lifelong interest in the arts, provide a gauge of what can be expected of children at various ages and grade levels, and present a baseline for measuring growth and skill.

Lesson plans with goals, objects, time frames, techniques, steps, illustrated examples, and assessment of growth are included.

My Thoughts on Teaching Art:

This book has a gorgeous cover for one.  Love it.  It’s geared to teaching art to grade 1, 2, and 3.  There are lesson plans with goals and time frames for each lesson which is very helpful.

I’m a self-proclaimed art failure.  I really am horrible at art.  Stick people are about the extent of my drawing abilities.  But I want my kids to be good at art and drawing.  Because of this, I take full advantage of anything that will help me teach them how to be successful in drawing and art.

There are units covered.  Grade one has five units.  Second grade has three units.  Finally, third grade has six units.  Each unit has a varying number of lessons from around five all the way up to ten.

I love the simplicity.  It tells me what we’re doing, why we’re going to do it, what the significance or importance to the developing child is, and then how to do it.  As the parent, you do need to make sure to read ahead enough to make sure you have all the supplies on hand.  I’ve noticed that most of the things needed are simple and what you would normally keep your craft cabinet stocked with.

This book is written for the common homeschool parent or teacher.  It’s not hard or complex and makes teaching art fun and much easier than I’m accustomed to.  Too bad I didn’t have this when I was trying to do art with my older children, they might have benefited from this!

I have been using this book with my 3-year-old, 6-year-old and a 9-year-old.  They don’t represent the grade levels though.  My three-year-old is definitely not at a grade one level!  But he is still enjoying the lessons.  I decided to just start with unit 1 lesson 1 of grade 1 for all of them and see how we do.  It’s been fun!

Some of my older children have jumped in on some of the lessons as well because kids love art and creating and there is never a reason to say no you can’t do this because you’re too old.  Age is a number and we do not think it defines us or should limit us.  As a mom of kids with special needs, I tend to throw age and grade levels out the window.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.  I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.  All opinions expressed are my own.  I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

More from Jerry

Ever since I was young, I have always loved art. It was only natural for me to be teaching and sharing the love of art to young people. Over the years, a number of parents, students and fellow teachers and administrators suggested that I should write a book about teaching art, particularly to the emerging beginning artist. This would hopefully help them gain confidence in themselves in return would flow into their reading and writing subjects. After retiring, pondering and headaches, I started putting it together and throwing around ideas to myself on what should be included and “Wala”…..here it is.
