About the Book The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass

After years of drifting, fifty-year-old Pete Ryman has settled down with his potbellied pig, Pearl, in the small town of Sleeping Grass–a place he never expected to see again. It’s not the life he dreamed of, but there aren’t many prospects for a high school dropout like him.

Elderly widow Wilma Jacobsen carries a burden of guilt over her part in events that led to Pete leaving Sleeping Grass decades ago. Now that he’s back, she’s been praying for the chance to make things right, but she never expected God’s answer to leave her flat on her face–literally–and up to her ears in meddling.

When the younger sister Pete was separated from as a child shows up in Sleeping Grass with her eleven-year-old son, Pete is forced to face a past he buried long ago, and Wilma discovers her long-awaited chance at redemption may come at a higher cost than she’s willing to pay.

Set in northern Montana along the rugged and remote Hi-Line, Katie Powner’s latest interweaves poignancy and humor to present a story of friendship, forgiveness, and moving forward.

My Thoughts on The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book.  But then I immediately fell in love with the characters.  I mean, how can you not love a main character with a pet pig he rescued from the garbage!?

Yes, you read that correctly.  Pete found Pearl at the dump and brought her home and she has made his life interesting ever since.  Pete is really a loveable guy.  He is a champion for the underdog.  He wants to help anyone and everyone.  And while he may not always believe the best of everyone he does his best to try.

Pete did make some mistakes in his life and he’s vowed not to make them again.  One of his biggest mistakes was accidentally killing a man in a fight.  He’s vowed never to use his fists again.  But is that a vow he can keep?  And should he when circumstances are dire?

Other characters you’re going to love that are interwoven into the story Wilma, Lily, and Windy Ray.

Wilma is a widow with a bad habit of trusting the wrong people.  She also has a secret that she needs to confess to Pete but can’t bring herself to do it.  Lily is a wonderful and sweet girl in a hard and bad situation.  Can she trust Wilma and Pete to help her?  And Windy Ray is a hoot!  He’s a funny and sweet character that you’re going to love and pray for.

I don’t want to tell you too much about the book, but it’s a wonderful one.  You need to read it.  A few disclaimers, there is abuse within the pages of this novel, there are hard times, and there are scams against the elderly, plus a bit of violence.

That said, it’s a wonderful book and I would read it again.
