Go Science Review
The one subject I have the most trouble teaching is Science.  So, as you can imagine I was pretty excited when we were able to review two of the  Go Science DVD’s Series 2 from Library and Educational Services.  We were allowed to pick two dvd’s and have them shipped to our house to view and learn from.

Library and Educational Services is a wholesale distributor who has been selling discounted materials for homeschoolers for over 35 years.  Of course, homeschoolers are not their only clientele, but we do appreciate their services!  They are located on the banks of the St. Joseph River in Michigan.  They do ship all over the world though which is wonderful and always a good thing to know!  Other products they offer are such classics as Adventures in Odyssey and the Complete Works of James Herriot.  Lots of fun resources for children and even adults.

We chose Volume 2: Life Science, Weather and Volume 5: States of Matter, Water.  These DVD’s are great for some fun science for kids ages 6-10.  These dvds are hosted by Ben Roy and tie science with God’s word/creation in a way children can understand and enjoy.  Mr Roy brings to life science for the children so they can learn and remember the foundations and fundamentals that they will need for years to come.

At the time of this posting the Volume 2: Life Science, Weather DVD is available for $8.97 which is 40% off the list price of $14.95.  The dvd is 60 minutes long.  Each experiment or demonstration lasts approximately 3-6 minutes.  This series was originally filmed for a Christian TV Broadcast show so that children could still experience the dangerous science experiments they would not be able to do on their own.  It is geared towards kids ages 6-10.

On this DVD you will find:

Life Science

  • Flashlight-Animal Eyes
  • Animal Skulls
  • Bobby Pins
  • What are you Looking at?
  • How Much do your Lungs Hold?
  • Eating Nails for Breakfast
  • Naked Eggs

Weather

  • Fire Tornado
  • Ping Pong Cannon
  • Liquid Nitrogen Cloud
  • Cloud in a Bottle
  • Garbage Can Vortex

With the onset of spring and tornado season here in tornado alley I wanted to get the Life Science and Weather for the kids.  They are very curious of tornadoes and how they form, what causes them, etc.  While we didn’t learn everything about them, we did learn quite a bit.  It was very easy to supplement on top of what the DVD’s gave to help the kids learn and understand.

The other DVD we received was Volume 5: States of Matter, Water which is another good one to be using in the spring/summer when the weather is getting hot!  Lots of “cool” experiments.  Yeah, my kids didn’t find that funny either.  This DVD is also $8.97 right now which is 40% off the normal list price of $14.95.  It is geared towards kids ages 6-10.  It is also 60 minutes in length.  On this DVD you will find:

States of Matter

  • Ice Cream
  • Oobleck
  • Density Column
  • Ice Block Melt
  • Run Through Corn Starch and Water
  • Pitcher of Cold Water put in Hot Water
  • Putting Ice in Water, Float or Sink
  • Making Butter

Water

  • Traveling Water
  • Antimagnetic Water
  • Pouring Water
  • Burning Water

These are very fun dvd’s to watch with your children.  Some of the experiments you can do on your own as well.  For instance, we made butter and ice cream.  We were also able to do most of the states of matter activities.  I do have to say that I agree with the age range of 6-10.  My 5 year old did understand most of it, but he’ll be six in just a few days now.  My 3 year olds thought things were “neat” but really did not understand or even really know what was going on in most of the experiments.  My oldest is 9 and she enjoyed these as well.  I do not have anyone over the age range to see if they would still understand and be entertained by these, but I myself did enjoy watching them with my children and watching my children learn.

In my opinion these are well done Go Science dvd’s and they really do teach science concepts to children.  While I would not use them as a full science course, they are great supplemental to get away from your yearly coursework and just have something fun to enjoy.  I can see us using these in the future for “fun” days.

This looks like a really good science series. I love doing simple experiments with the kids. Danny would really enjoy this. He is already asking when school starts because he can’t wait to learn the things they do in science in 3rd grade.
