We love to read in our house and I love having good books about Christian leaders for my children to read.  They make great read-aloud books too!  The most recent book we’ve added to our read aloud and school schedule is Heroes of History Thomas Edison: Inspiration and Hard Work.  YWAM Publishing offers hundreds of wonderful books and study guides for your reading pleasure.  We have the entire Christian Heroes: Then and Now series that I purchased at a homeschool conference and I love adding new titles each year!  Slowly we are acquiring some of the Heroes of History as well.

For this review, we were offered our choice of several books.  Because we already have the entire Christian Heroes series I knew that we wanted a Heroes of History title.  Thomas Edison seemed like a perfect fit for us and I knew he wasn’t already on our shelf.  I have shared in other blog posts how we love to have one of these wonderful YWAM books on our daily read schedule.  With this book, we also received a downloadable file of a study guide. 

About the Book

All books in the Heroes of History and Christian Heroes: Then and Now series are written by Janet and Geoff Benge.  These books read easily and are a good length for a chapter book.  I find that my children ages 9 and up can read them on their own but that they get more from them if we read them together. 

The Heroes of History and Christian Heroes books cover not only just history, but geography, science, and government as well.  Most of the books have a downloadable study guide that can be used to delve deeper into the books and the times surrounding the history of our person.  

This book focuses on Thomas Edison and his life of invention.  Through this book, you will get a better view of who Thomas Edison was and what he contributed to society plus what made him who he was.  This will be enhanced by the use of the Study Guide.  

Study Guide

Within the study guide, you will find arts and crafts, study questions, essay options, and so much more to help you delve deeper into your person.  For Thomas Edison, some of those study guide details are creating a display corner of the life and times of Thomas Edison, studying the music and clothing of the period, and so much more!

As you can see from the above shot of the table of contents for the study guide it covers a lot and will definitely help enhance the learning experience. 

What We Thought

We love reading in our house.  I highly encourage my children to read and we even have time for reading daily.  Reading has always been something that my children see me doing daily as well.  I feel this has led them all to be avid readers.

With the Heroes of History books, we like to read them aloud as a family.  I tend to read our read-aloud books when my children are all sat down doing something.  For this book I have been reading it over the breakfast time.  So while my children finish eating I reach for our book.  All conversation ceases as they listen to me read.  After I’m done reading the chapter for the day we go through and discuss the chapter questions from the study guide. 

We do this as a family.  Yes, my three year old listens and chats too but he doesn’t get quite as much or offer quite the depth of answers to the questions that my older children will do. 

I don’t feel that read-aloud books really have an age limit of too young or too old.  In our family, everyone learns to listen to the story being read and offer their own insights.  When I ask my three-year-old what his favorite part of a story was he might say the bulb breaking instead of an older child who would go into more detail and tell me why that was his favorite part.  It’s training him to listen and learn to narrate just as his older siblings do. 

We have loved reading Thomas Edison and I look forward to adding more books from YWAM to our bookshelves.  Lots of books come into our house but only a select few get to stay due to lack of space.  All books by YWAM always stay on our bookshelves and that says a lot for the quality of these books.  We highly encourage everyone to get copies of all of their books. 

Thomas Edison was an incredible person in our history and he truly shaped the world around him and the future to come.  Imagine if we had never had the lightbulb!  And that’s just one of his many amazing discoveries.  But what will stick with you the most is how little schooling he had and how much he overcame to become what and who he was
