Wisdom Wonder Project
Homeschool Review Crew
What are you doing for Kindergarten this year? Do you have a kindergartener? We have to start keeping records once a child turns seven so that is when I start first grade with them. We do fun preschool and kindergarten work that I don’t have to keep records of before that. I was beyond thrilled when Wisdom Wonder Project came up for review with the Homeschool Review Crew because I have a little girl who just turned seven and could use it! The part of the program that is perfect for her and I will talk about more in-depth is the Young Scholars Bundle. It provides monthly downloads full of fun activities and learning.
About the Program
Wisdom Wonder Project has three programs available on their website currently which I will describe in detail below in the Inside the Program subheading. Those three programs are Little Wonders Bundle, Young Scholars Bundle, and Singapore Math.
This curriculum follows the classical education model for teaching your child. It started out in 2005 as the San Luis Classical Academy because there was a need for a good classical model school.
Their levels within each of the bundles contain not just literature but art, history, and science as well so your child is getting a lot of information and subjects covered but also having fun and being hands-on.
All of the bundles can be purchased by month or by a full year. If you choose the year option there is a discount available.
Inside the Program
Little Wonders Bundle
We were given access to all three programs that are available. The first bundle you can use is the Little Wonders Bundle which is for preschool and kindergarten. It is very easy to navigate. When I go to my accessible courses I click on Little Wonders and can see that there are three levels within the program. That means you get a preschool-age four, a preschool-age five, and a kindergarten age six program within the same bundle!
Each age range has its own download each month. All of these downloads except for three are available to be downloaded immediately! I loved that you could do that. I’m the type of person that likes to get it all sorted out and printed out at the start of the school year.
For those that purchase the program, you do have to choose which of the three levels to use as you are only allowed one download per month with your purchase. So you could download month one of the Jr K but not also the first month of the K level. If you wanted all three levels for different children you would need to do three separate yearly orders or purchase each one by the month.
The three levels for the Wisdom Wonder Project Little Wonders Bundle are Preschool, Junior Kindergarten, and Kindergarten. So you can go through and see which level is best for your child.
After looking over the program I decided to download the preschool to see how it works with my youngest son who is four. What child wouldn’t love all things fairies and castles and fun! I really like that it tells me the books for the month in the header on the main page so that I know exactly what to request for the month from the library.
Singapore Math
This is an online math program that is available through the Wisdom Wonder Project. A teacher has videos that you watch. There are some materials that are required to go along with the program. We have a math curriculum that we’re using and loving so we are not using this math program but I did look it over.
The videos are fun and engaging and while I was watching one I had several little children clustered around me watching as well. Even if we don’t get the materials to go with it we might start watching and learning anyway on rainy days or more consistently once we’re in the house more this winter.
There are two grade levels available currently. Kindergarten and First Grade can both be accessed and are fun videos to watch. You do need to purchase the workbooks to go with the curriculum but you can also watch the videos on their own.
Young Scholars Bundle
This is the main bundle we are reviewing from Wisdom Wonder Project. As I mentioned above I am using it with my seven-year-old for her first “real” year of school.
How We’re Using
First things first, I went online and to their website to access the curriculum. It was very simple to access my account. Then I clicked on the Young Scholars bundle. From there I was able to click on download month 01 and boom it was ready for me to print! I printed the entire month and placed it in a binder so that we were ready to go. Actually, I printed the first three months. They were all that were available to print at the moment and I wanted to be able to look over them and get a good feel for the program.
The covers are not colorful. In fact, most of the pages are mostly black and white without a ton of color. However, there are full-color maps in the back of the ancients which are amazing. Color is used when needed but not overused which is nice on the printing budget.
My daughter is using the curriculum between four and five days a week. We normally have one day a week that we are gone running errands and we just don’t have the time on that day. If my husband is working on the weekend we will use that day for school. That’s how we get the fifth day some weeks.
There are sample schedules in each of the different parts of the monthly unit. So month one has three units and then it has three sample schedules for how you are supposed to use that unit. I found this to be really useful as I wasn’t sure how I was going to use them all together.
I love all the books that are part of the curriculum. We are a book heavy family and I encourage my children to free read every day. I also do a lot of reading to my children before they can read. These are good solid books that I approve of! I love good books but really don’t like silly books that don’t teach a lesson or a value.
With a large family, you often find that other children want to help and do the lessons as well. For this curriculum, I found that the color maps were a huge draw for my almost-two-year-old. When big sister would be working on her map skills and coloring/labelling little sister would be coloring on the actual full-color map.
This might just be one of the cutest things I’ve seen. She also liked to help find the colors that her bigger sister would need and hand them to her.
Also, see that elephant project. That’s next and I might be more excited about it than my daughter is. Isn’t it just the cutest!?
Overall we love this curriculum. I do think it’s a bit much in the writing department, but that is probably because we don’t do a lot of school until they hit this age and start with them. By writing I mean the copy work. Basically, I’ve been writing it on the whiteboard, we’ve been saying it together and then she does write it but we don’t stress over it. I don’t want it to be something that she hates so I don’t force her to write nicely and if she can’t write it all we pick one or two words.
Definitely a curriculum I would recommend to someone wanting a classical approach to first grade!
