How do you do with math in your homeschool?  Homeschool math for kids can be hard.  There are so many different programs out there it’s hard to find out which will be the best for your child.  Recently we were able to try out and review MathandAlgebra.com with is a program online for kids.  Let’s chat about MathandAlgebra.com!

We received an annual membership for family for review purposes.  We registered three children for the course.  You can purchase the program by monthly or annually as well as try out a FREE trial.  When you purchase it for one month or one year for one student you get two other students for free.  One month is currently $15 while the annual package is $99.  This gets you access to all four courses within the program.

About the Program

Within MathandAlgebra.com you can choose from four different courses for your child.  They offer Basic Math, Advanced Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra.   Within each course it is broken down more into subcategories such as fractions, decimals, etc.  There are four steps to doing each of the courses.

These four steps are

  1.  Watch the video.  The lesson is recorded in video format.  Your child simply watches the lesson online and then they are ready to do their questions.  The video is straightforward and simple.  It covers what they are learning without getting in-depth.  It’s simply watching the teacher do the problems on a whiteboard.

  1.   Printable worksheets.  The worksheets are PDF downloads to be printed and worked on.  There is also an answer key that can be downloaded and printed as well.
  2.   Quizzes.  At the end of each chapter is a quiz for the student to take and assess how they are doing.  There are also cumulative quizzes at the end of each course.
  3.   Earn badges.  The student can earn badges and collect them as they do lessons and quizzes.  The better you do the more badges you get.

Once you have completed everything for each chapter or unit it shows you by checking off the box for you.  This makes it really simple for your child to know where they are at and what comes next.

Our Thoughts

I have three different children using this program.  Two of these children are 12 year old boys and the third is a 9 year old girl.  My daughter is probably the best at math but she decided to start at the bottom level and move her way up.  She’s making great progress because she is very motivated to do her school on her own.

This program works amazing for self motivated children.  My boys do need to be reminded a lot more to do their math and they also aren’t as motivated by earning badges.  Part of that might just be their preteen mentality though.

The only course that we are not currently using is the algebra.  I did look at it through my parent account.  There are 10 subunits within the course.  There are 92 lessons within the units combined plus quizzes at the end of each unit and one quiz at the end.  If you did one lesson per day plus no lessons on the days you did quizzes it would take you 103 days to complete the course.

Kids Thoughts

My kids like this program.  They like how simple it is.  My sons like that they only have to do one lesson a day.  No extra quizzes each day.  Just one worksheet and one video and they can be done.  My boys do not grade their own work. The prefer for me to do it and let them know if they need to redo anything.  My daughter on the other hand very much likes grading her own work and always wants to get a 100% so she will reprint the worksheet and rework it to have a saved copy of her 100% work in her notebook.

That brings me to the notebook.  They each print off their worksheet for each day.  I do not have them print the answers.  The worksheet goes into a 3 ring binder after being hole punched.  Each unit can then be separated within the course.

So this gets a thumbs up from both my boys for simplicity. It gets a thumbs up from my daughter because it doesn’t limit her to one lesson per day.  She loves that she can do as many lessons each day as she wants instead of having to wait for only one lesson a day to load.

Let’s just say this is a homeschool math for kids that is going to be enjoyed here for an entire year at least!

When I log into my back office of the math program I see my students.  Each student has a login of their own plus an email that is assigned to them from the program.  I can also look at my account and make changes to my subscription or take away/add children to the program.

I can look at all of the levels and work through them myself as a student.  This, to me, is helpful because then I can go and look at what the kids are doing and see if I can understand or possibly help them with something that they are struggling with.

Within my parent account I can see what all three of my children have been doing.  I can look at reports based on each course.  Within each course it shows me how much of that course each child has completed.

The back office part is super easy to navigate and I love that.  I need it to be simple or I am not going to get on there are look around much because I’ll get lost or confused.  This is simple and easy to use plus I love that I can see how my kids are doing compared to each other.  I may have mentioned my daughter is an overachiever, but it is also good to show this to my boys because they don’t want her to get too far ahead of them.

Cons

My only con is that you do have to buy a new membership every three children for this particular homeschool math for kids program. So basically you buy an annual membership for one child and get two free.  I do have to note this because I have found that a lot of companies who say “family” do limit their number of children to three or four.  I have not purchased this so I can’t say for sure, but I do believe that if you did have six kids working on this and bought two annual memberships that you would still only have one back office.  In my back office for parents it does say that you can register up to ten students.
