Greg Landry's Homeschool Science

With having lots of children comes lots of homeschooling and trying to find the right curriculum for both myself and each child.  It can get tiring and be a long process.  One subject I’ve had the worst luck with is science.  So I was excited to try out an online science for middle school through the Homeschool Review Crew.  We received a year of access to Young Scientist Earth and Space Science through Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science which is a Self-Paced 4th-7th grade one-semester class.

About the Course

Online Science for Middle School

I was specifically looking for something more geared towards middle school for this review.  We were offered several different levels and classes to choose from but this is the one that my kids chose.  I have several in the age range for this one which is 4th through 7th grade.  If you’re looking for an online science for middle school I’d highly recommend looking towards Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science.

Other offered courses in the Young Scientist Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.  We received full twelve-month access to our course of choice.  The course is accessed through Canvas so you have to have a Canvas account.

The course is self-paced so feel free to work at your own pace.  It’s not something where you have to do this on this day and this on another.  We found that doing one lesson a week was the best fit for us but you might be different.

Within the course, there are 13 lessons if you count note-taking.  This is the first lesson.  I really feel it needs a full week to itself as you discuss what note-taking method is going to be best for your child and possibly practice a bit on that preferred method.

Our Thoughts

This is hands down our new favorite online science for middle school.  The instructor is fun to listen to, he doesn’t drone, and he keeps my kid’s attention.  This is super important with middle school kids.  They often don’t pay attention or can drift off and daydream.  I’ve found with this program that they actually are paying attention and listening.

The lessons are short.  Each video is approximately 20-30 minutes long.   There is a PDF that you can easily print off to use with the course which includes the lessons and student activities.  This is colorful and eye-catching.

I loved the lesson on the Prime Meridian to segue into our time change.  It was interesting figuring out what time it would be where our cousins live in England versus what time it is here versus our cousins in Virginia, etc.

Of course, learning about tides makes my kids think we need an ocean vacation.  Hmm, maybe we should visit those cousins in Virginia after all.  It’d be supplementing the teaching of two concepts in this course, right?!  They think so at least.  After all hands-on learning is the best way.

But the real reason I chose this course for my kids is the Solar System!  We don’t do the solar system in a certain grade but we do try to touch on it at least in each grade.  I love that this course gives us a more in-depth look than what we have been doing prior.  Does anyone else go crazy over the planets and stars?
