Teaching Creation to your Children #hsreviews

Teaching Creation to your children can be a bit of a hassle these days.  There is so much material out there that doesn’t fully support what the Bible teaches that you have to look and do some research before choosing one.  We recently reviewed a book called Purposeful Design: Understanding the Creation by Jay Schabacker.  Purposeful Design is about just that, teaching children about God’s creating everything with a design in mind.

Purposeful Design Review
This book is appropriate for all age levels.  You can read it aloud to your littles who can’t read yet, those that can read can read it to themselves, and even adults can enjoy it.  The book is available to purchase for $18.95 which includes a free download of The Young Explorer’s Club Curriculum.  Discounts are also offered for buying multiple copies of the book at once.

The book, we received a hardcover book to review, contains seven chapters.  Each chapter correlates with a day of the Creation.  The chapters are:

    • Chapter 1: The First Day: Creation of the Heavens and the Earth, The Foundation of it all
    • Chapter 2: The Second Day: Creation of the Atmosphere and Water
    • Chapter 3:  The Third Day: Creation of the Dry Land and Vegetation
    • Chapter 4:  The Fourth Day: Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars
    • Chapter 5:  The Fifth Day: Creation of the Birds and Fish
    • Chapter 6:  The Sixth Day: Creation of the Land Creatures and Humans
    • Chapter 7:  The Seventh Day

The corresponding curriculum download also has seven chapters to work along with the chapters.  Included in it is kid’s workbook, teacher set, and a certificate of completion.

The Young Explorer’s Club Curriculum offers a study guide for you to use this book as a way of teaching Creation to your children in your homeschool as well.  For us this could count as a Bible credit or a Science credit.  It fits the bill for both!  This workbook is geared towards elementary aged children who are able to read or older.  That does not mean that you cannot use it with younger children.  Here in our house we firmly believe in everyone learning and often do workbooks/study guides aloud so that everyone can answer and hear the answers.

So, what about the book?  What did you think about it?  Well, we really enjoyed it.  I have a hard time finding things to use in our homeschool for science.  I want to make sure to teach the kids with curriculum that supports our view of the Creation.  The author of this book is a former aerospace scientist so not only is the book in correlation with what the Bible teachers, but it also offers a scientific view of how this is possible.  I love it when we can combine science and the Bible and they agree!

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous!  So beautiful.  I could sit and look at those for hours.  The book itself is a nice thick cover and sturdy pages.  It’s one of those books that is going to stay together for years even with constant kid usage.  And yes, that is something I look at when I buy books for my family.  When you have lots of kids that are younger ages it’s important to have a book that isn’t going to fall apart if it has daily readings.  Books get read quite a bit in our house and the kids aren’t always nice to the books they read.

In our opinion, this is a wonderful book.  I feel every family should have a copy.  And since Christmas is coming it would make a great gift for those on your list!

I love this, we don’t homeschool and our children attend Public School which makes it a little harder for us to teach Creation.

I can see how that would. I think this would be a great book for public schools to use too! After all they’re supposed to teach all the “theories” right? 🙂

Hi Erin. When you say “The author of this book is a former aerospace scientist so not only is the book in correlation with what the Bible teachers, but it also offers a scientific view of how this is possible”, does it means sometimes you teach not science or evidence-based things? If you do, then why do you care if this specific author uses science? Bible should be enough if you hav faith in the Lord! Remember to be careful with doubt and strong in your faith!

I think when we share with some people who don’t believe it is a great tool to have something like this book that can show them a bit more of the scientific. My kids don’t need the science part of this but it is great to show to others. It really is a great Creation teaching tool!
