Online Math Fun

Homeschool Review Crew

As part of the Homeschool Review Crew we’ve been having some online math fun with a new supplemental math program called I Know It.  This program comes from the creators of SuperTeacherWorksheets.com and is an online supplement for math.  We received a years access to the family membership which includes six students plus myself.  It covers grade levels Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.  Make sure to check out their pricing page and even sample it for a while with their free trial offer.

About the Program

The number one thing to note is that this is not a full math curriculum but rather a supplemental program.  It’s amazing for use when you need more work on a specific area or just review in general.  Grades kindergarten through fifth are covered so older children can review lower levels if needed as well.

As the parent you can go in and assign lessons for each student.  As part of this you can put what percentage they need to have correct before they can move on as well.  I liked that I can assign what I know they need to work on instead of just letting them choose what they want to work on.  Your kids may be different, but mine like to do the easy work first!

Also within the parent or teacher function you can edit their grade level, monitor their progress, or even delete them as a student entirely.  I’m actually curious at the delete function as I know it won’t take my oldest that long to review all the fifth grade material and then I’m hoping I can put another child in her slot for some review of lessons.

What we Thought

We’ve used many math programs and curriculum over the years.  Some have been online while others are in book format.  This online math fun supplemental program is a great way to work on those areas that might present a bit of a challenge for your child.

Because I have so many children I was able to put one per grade level.  When we started out I would sit next to them all just to see what their levels looked like and how it worked for them.  I found that my oldest who is thirteen (I put her in fifth grade as it’s the highest level) had a really easy time and could complete several review lessons a day.  My five year old daughter is just starting school this year so I popped her into kindergarten math and she does about three lessons a week.  I’m still tweaking how many questions per lesson she needs to do and what her percentage needs to be before she can move on.

More Thoughts

Part of what makes this online math fun is that there is a little robot or emoticons that tell you good job after you get something correct.  I personally found it a bit annoying(hello mom who just wants to get school moving along) that with kindergarten you have to wait for him to do his dance before you can move on.

But then!  Oh yes there is a but then.  I realized that I can customize in settings for each child what happens.  So we can have a dancing robot or we can simply have an emoticon say good job.  That sped along the process a lot.  We only have one computer currently for all the kids to work on so it was important that we utilize our time wisely.  If each child had more time to focus on this online math fun without needing to give another child time to use the computer I could see these being wonderful.

A side note.  This is common core aligned.  Because it’s a supplemental math program I don’t have a problem with that as we can skip areas that we may not agree with.  I do not purposely choose common core aligned curriculum; in fact, I normally choose to avoid them unless they are simply aligned because they meet the guidelines while also meeting the guidelines I myself set.  All in all, we’ve been enjoying this program and appreciate the review it gives us.
