Homeschool Review Crew

My kids love to draw and create but homeschool art is not a subject I normally tackle.  I’m not an art lover.  Nor am I very good at art or drawing.  I was very pleased to be able to work with the Homeschool Review Crew and Kidzaw.com on a homeschool art review!  An Amazon gift card came to us so we could purchase the Master Kitz The Starry Night.  The kit then shipped to us so the fun could commence!

About the Kit

Designed for ages 5-105 this kit contains everything you need to recreate your own masterpiece!  The kit we received helps kids recreate The Starry Night by Van Gogh.  In fact, not only does the kit contain everything needed for one child to use it but another additional child as well.  Everything for the painting is included plus information about the original.  This helps give your child a backstory for the painting.  What’s so important about this painting?  Why do we study it?  Who painted it?  When was it painted?  I really appreciated this that the kids were getting some art history while also having fun creating something.

The kit retails currently for $25.00 on Amazon and also qualifies for Prime shipping if you have that option.  Inside the kit you will find:

  • reusable artist’s toolbox
  • three custom paint colors
  • custom Van Gogh paint roller
  • four artist quality oil pastels
  • two pieces deluxe art paper size 16 inch by 20 inch
  • composition stencil
  • sponge roller
  • star mask sticker sheet
  • Van Gogh learning materials
  • easy to follow instructions

There are also other kits available for other major works of art.  This is definitely something we will be looking into for future art projects as my help is barely needed and I don’t have to draw anything!!

Our Thoughts

This is an amazing kit!  I would highly recommend this for Christmas gifts for the kids in your life.  Or you could purchase the kits and have your kids create works of art to gift to members of the family for Christmas.  Grandma and Grandpa or aunts and uncles would love to have an original by your child hanging in their house.  And bonus they won’t have to guess what the picture is of.

My kids wholeheartedly approved of this kit.  The only problem was I had ten kids who wanted to use it and only enough supplies for two.  So I can definitely see myself buying more supplies to reuse the roller and such with the other kids.  I decided to have one older child and one younger child do this so that we could see if the age range was correct.  Always having to form our own hypothesis around here(my two year old loves Dinosaur Train).  For the younger child my five year old daughter is at the bottom of the age range while for the older child my 13 year old daughter was happy to help.

I also bought the above book off of amazon as an extra supplement so more could enjoy this study.

How We Used It

When we first opened the kit we learned that the paper was in a roll.  So we employed some Bibles to hold it down flat.  It definitely would have proved difficult to use the paper when it refused to lay flat.  We left it this way for a few hours and when we came back it was ready to use.  They suggest rerolling but the opposite direction in the instructions.

The paints are in small squeeze bottles so you will need something to put them on.  Paper plates are ideal for this.  If none can be had on hand you can use a real plate, just make sure to wash them really well before the paint dries.  Something else to have on hand while using the paint is definitely paper towels.  Some of these paper towels should be wet as well for any spills or messes little ones make.

The one thing that is not reusable or maybe we used them wrong, are the stars.  When we went to peel them off the first painting they actually tore the paper a bit and they themselves tore apart as well.
