Continent Race

Byron’s Games

Homeschool Review Crew

If you’ve read any of our geography reviews this year you know that geography is something we’re working hard on and now we’re off on a continent race.  To help us with our geography series we’re reviewing a fun game on the continents.  Continent Race is a learning and education game that we received as part of the Homeschool Review Crew from Byron’s Games.

About the Product

Continent Race

I love the why behind why Byron began this company.  Byron was a normal fun loving full of energy boy until he was hospitalized at the age of 6.  He stayed there for a month and came up with an idea.  He wanted to help other kids who were like him and having to spend large amounts of time in the hospital.  From that one hardship came wonderful ideas and now these fun products.

Now let’s chat about Continent Race.  In Continent Race, your child will be learning not only geography as they see where all the continents are and what countries make them up, but they’re also going to be learning about the flags of each country as well!

Per the rules, your children are going to be racing to get the required amount of cards from each continent before the other players do!

Continent Race is recommended for ages 7 and above.  I say recommended but my 3-year-old has played this game with the help of a partner and my six year old has played this as her own player as well. So do take into account your own child’s abilities and know that the recommended age is just that, a recommendation.

Contents

With this game, you get the box, the board to play on(world map), 5 continent cards with their list of countries on the back and a map on the front, 205 country cards(includes challenge and mystery cards), and 3 Antarctica wild cards.

Our Thoughts

Continent Race

This is such a fun game and a great way to learn about different countries and continents.  We are doing a large unit on geography through our whole school year and Continent Race has been the perfect addition to that!

Some things to know.  Pronunciation can be really hard for younger kids.  We don’t require perfect pronunciation each and every time.  But I do require them to try to say the names to the best of their ability.  Then when the game is over we go through all the names that we used that game so they’re learning new correct pronunciations each time.

The game plays quickly.  I went into it thinking it might take forever but once your kids learn how to play it it’s going to move quickly and they’re going to love it!

Continent Race

We were a bit confused about the continent board cards.  They are there to pass around to see where your countries fall within the continent.  We didn’t play that they had to show where it was within the country when my six-year-old was playing because that was too hard for her to do.  When the older kids were playing though they got ruthless and enacted time limits!  If you didn’t point out all four countries within so many seconds they wanted you to put those cards back in your hand!

Adjustments We Made

The mystery cards are also something that we did not play with if my six year old was playing.  Because she really likes to play we ended up just keeping those out for now.  If my older kids wanted to play during their free time they had to pick them all back out before putting the game back.

Initially shuffling all those cards together takes a long time.  Also when we were just learning the game it was interesting to say the least but once the kids got the hang of it they just loved playing!  IN fact, a few times I had to remind a child that they had all the continents and had won so they could stop playing!

Continent Race

Within all the game cards there are also challenge cards that you can use to challenge another player to a continent race where you say the names of the countries and the first to mispronounce a name loses.  We just used those as regular playing cards for now.  My older kids did use them as challenges but they would then fight over who did or did not mispronounce something so unless their dad or I were there with them we put a stop to using them that way.  Joys of sibling squabbles!

Final Verdict

Continent Race

All in all, we have loved this game and it gets easier the more we play it.  My kids all love to play it so I limit them to only four at a time or they play partners.  This works out well in that my six year old normally gets a partner so she has help if she needs it.  This also allows the three-year-old to play more often as he has to have a partner.  He can color code the countries but of course, he can’t say their names!

If you’d like to see more of the game in use I am posting videos of my children playing the game and posting them on my Instagram account and then saving them to a highlight on Geography.  Feel free to ask any questions too as we love to share about what we’re using!
