Basic Economics Course

Homeschool Review Crew

Boundary Stone

Have you added a basic economics course to your homeschool yet?  With the Homeschool Review Crew, we recently received one to review through Boundary Stone. Economics Online Course Bundle is the title of the course and it is a basic economics course for your student.  We received 12-month access to the course though it is meant to take one semester.

Basic Economics Course

This course is being used by my high schooler.  I would recommend it for junior high or high school students.  We received the online course as well as a downloadable PDF Teacher’s Guide.  Mailed to us is a hardback copy of the textbook, Basic Economics, A Natural Law Approach to Economics fourth edition, as well.  Other books needed are available to purchase in print or to download for free.

You will need a copy of Whatever Happened to Penny Candy by Richard Maybury and The Law by Frederic Bastiat.

We also were given access to a budget mini-course with our review materials.

Boundary Stone offers courses covering economics, government, and budgeting as well as history.

About the Course

This course is an online course but with a physical hardback textbook.  The teacher’s guide is a download and there are a few other books that you will need that can be purchased or downloaded.   The course is self-paced so that you can work through it quickly or at the recommended pace.  It is recommended to take on semester though access is for a year.

Basic Economics Course

The course is taught through a series of videos.  You watch the videos, do your reading, answer questions, take quizzes, etc.

There are four units within the course.  Within each of the units is at least one module.  There are six modules within the course.  Each module has a number of lessons and quizzes.  Roughly I would say that there are half as many quizzes are there are lessons.

This economics course is very much history focused which I as a history lover really like.  The course really talks about how history has shaped economics and what was done wrong plus it incorporates the Bible as well.

Pros and Cons

The course is self-paced which is a definite pro.  It allows my daughter to work at her own pace.  I have found that making a rough outline for her so that she knows what she should be doing each week to get it done within the time frame I’ve slated is a good idea.

I also like that I can just pop on and see where she is at.  We could have set up another account so that there were a separate parent and student account but I didn’t see the need for that as we are using the same computer and I didn’t want her to have to make sure she was in the right account when she went to work on her course.

Another aspect I really like is how much history and the Bible are both included in this course.  Within the first module, we chat about creation and Moses.

The focus of this basic economics course is on principles of limited government, free market, and free enterprise.  This is different than most economics courses and I liked this.

As a large family mom, my only con is that you will need to purchase separate accounts for separate children.  There is no option of enrolling more than one child.  But, you could use the same textbooks for the children as long as you had separate online portions for them.

I do have to say I’m for all physical books and would love a way to bundle purchasing the three books needed with the course.  There were two that didn’t come with the course that are required.  You can find them as free downloads but I prefer to have the physical book.

Our Thoughts

First I love this course.  I wish this had been my economics course in college.  It starts out the first lesson talking about creation!  So, disclaimer, if you’re not a Christian and don’t subscribe to the same beliefs as us you may not like this course.  But we love this basic economics course.

Basic Economics Course

In my economics courses, we never asked how the creation had anything to do with providing a foundation for a study on economics.  In fact, God was never mentioned anywhere.
