Drive Thru History® Adventures

As part of the Homeschool Review Crew, I am pleased to share with you a new product that is soon to be released from Drive Thru History® Adventures.  We received lifetime access to Bible Unearthed to check it out early and let you know what it’s going to be like!

About the Program

This new program from Drive Thru History® Adventures is different than their normal series where you drive around and visit places.  In Bible Unearthed the focus is on exploring history and showing the importance and impact of archaeology.  It also delves into discoveries that are made within archaeology that can help us further understand the Bible and the times surrounding it.  This is a 12 week part series.

The course is digital and fully online.  There are videos to watch and discussions to be had.

As for an age range.  I personally feel this can work with all ages though obviously more is going to be gleaned from it with your older children than the younger.  To get the full impact of the curriculum I am going to recommend it for middle school and high school students.  They will be able to utilize it the most.

For use as a family though you can certainly watch the videos and have some great discussions with your younger children as well.  It just might not look the same as someone who is actually using the curriculum fully.  There really isn’t a right or wrong with using this.

The Topics

There are 12 sections within the program.  Those 12 sections are:

  1.  What is Archaeology?
  2.  The Impact of Archaeology
  3.  Locating Archaeological Sites
  4.  The Life of an Archaeologist
  5.  What’s Being Discovered Today?
  6.  Archaeological Mysteries
  7.  Top Discoveries in Bible Archaeology
  8.  Getting Involved with Archaeology
  9.  Trends in Archaeology
  10.  Weird Archaeology
  11.  Accidental Discoveries in Archaeology
  12.  What’s Left to Be Discovered?

Within The Sections

Within each of the sections, you will have a video to watch.  There is also a fully written out exposition and breakout of the topic being discussed.  Downloadable PDF worksheets are provided for students to do.  There are also answer keys that are available to go with them.

“Dig Deeper” Activities are written out that can be done as a family as well.  These will help you get a bit more information about the topic as well as maybe grab a bit more understanding if you’re having trouble fully grasping the concept.

To go with the “Dig Deeper” activities are more activities just for fun too.  These are great to do as a family.

Also available is a Facebook community that you are available to join and ask questions/chat with other adventurers.  The link to join will be on the sidebar for your course.

Let’s Chat About the Videos

The videos are hosted by two familiar faces to us and one new face.  Dave Stotts and Randall Niles who have been with us in previous adventures with Drive Thru History® come back.  They are joined by Dr. Titus Kennedy.  He is a professor (PhD) and an archaeologist.  I found these three doing round table type sessions to be very engaging and stimulating to the brain.

Also of note is that there are several intros before the lessons start that help you know how to use the course.  That is helpful.

Our Thoughts

I’m a huge history buff.  I love history.  My husband loves history.  And we’re raising children who love history as well  So naturally this is a curriculum that really pulled at us.  It made me want to use it because who doesn’t want to learn more about history?  Plus archaeology is just cool.

If you have used other programs from Drive Thru History® Adventures you might be a bit shocked by this one because it is not formulated like the other programs.

The curriculum comes with a sample schedule which I found easy to use and something we did utilize.

Bible Unearthed

I think our favorite session was in episode 6.  It’s about archaeological mysteries.  We studied the Ark of the Covenant recently in our Bible study and this fit in really well because nobody knows where it ended up.

How We Are Using

We really have been enjoying this curriculum.  I think of it as a full curriculum.  You will have to decide if you want to call it history or Bible.  In our house, we are using it for an extra history credit.  We are using the suggested schedule.  I don’t do the whole thing with all my kids though.

For my elementary kids and those not yet in school, we are just watching the episodes and chatting about them.  So they are only involved on day 1 and day 4.  My middle school kiddos come in on days 2 and 3 as well but take day 5 off.  This is so my high school kids can do day 5 and get a semester credit for this course as a history course.

I have found that my middle school kiddos do really well with thinking and the activities but the worksheets and graded activities they weren’t scoring as high on.  It might just be my children but since they don’t need this on a transcript I choose to not grade their work.  As long as they can carry on an intelligent conversation with me on the subjects we’re discussing I count them as having passed the course.

We are over halfway done because we did double up one week and have utilized Saturdays for school while my husband has been working on them during harvest season.  This allows us to take off more time around Christmas or for fun weather.
