Do you have a child who struggles with reading and might need a little extra help with reading? Failure Free Reading Home Edition might just be the help they need. We received six-month free access to the program as part of the Homeschool Review Crew. The Failure Free Reading Home Edition allows the student to work on their reading skills in a unique way.
About the Program
Failure Free Reading operates on the premise that every child can read and that often we are underestimating the ability of struggling readers. Through online work that can be tailored to the child, they work on word recognition and teaching to help with reading. The program works best when used daily. They believe that with their approach reading will improve regardless of age or ability.
Within Failure Free Reading, comprehension is one of the biggest things they work on. Improving reading comprehension is crucial to helping children succeed.
When you first go onto the program there will be sections for you to add children, but also to have them do diagnostic tests, and work on lessons. You also set up a student login with a photo for them to get into their own lessons.
There are two options for using the program. The first is student-led. The student will go in and do it all themselves and the parent can check in on their progress as needed. For the second option, it is parent-led. With this option, the parent will read to the child and help them/guiding them through the work.
This program is 100% digital and online. Your child gets their own login and you as the parent have your own. There is also the option of downloadable materials that go along with the child’s lesson to help them learn and understand.
The downloadable materials are found by going to the instruct section of the parent site and clicking on the child you’d like to instruct. Then the downloadable materials are at the bottom under the choices for the lesson. By choices, I mean that you can choose if the lesson is taught with or without subtitles, with sign language, or with both.
Our Thoughts on The Program
I started this program by signing in three students. Two of them are continuing on and using the program often while the third I have taken a step back with. I’ll talk more about each child below.
My Students
The oldest child I have using the program is 15 and developmentally delayed. She has a very hard time with reading comprehension. She can read but often will guess at a word instead of sounding it out. I thought this would be a good fit for her. She has been using the program at least three days a week and while she was started out at a level that was too difficult for her, after some email communications with those in charge she is now in a spot where she is doing well and actually progressing.
Second, to start the program is a 13-year-old boy. He definitely struggles with reading and I was really hopeful that this program would help him improve his reading skills. I would classify him definitely as a struggling reader. He’s still in elementary-level books and likes to tell people he cannot read, even though he can. My main goal for him was to add confidence with his reading with improved reading being secondary in my opinion.
The last child I added to the program is a 10-year-old girl. She will know her letters one day and all of their sounds and some sight words but the next day she won’t remember any of this. So far this program has not been the best fit for her as she cannot understand the instructions on her own as a student-led program. This means this needs to be parent-led. We are still struggling with her not recognizing things and I decided to have her take a break from the program while we focus on letters for a few weeks.
Support
I was really impressed with the support of this program. After having my children start the program and them not doing so well I began to wonder whether we would see any improvement. And then I got an email. They were emailing me offering to help me get the kids into the best areas for them in the program. Through this, we were able to get the two older children into spots that they seem to be doing well with. I have to say I loved the support and knowing that they were watching and wanting to help my children as much as possible!
Here is a report from one of my children on their new story. As you can see they’re doing really well and this is a good spot for them. If I had screenshot the below story you would have seen a number of fails all in a row and an overall failing score. This was not giving them confidence at all. Now they ask to use the program and are enjoying their learning. I love this!
I have to say that I am pleased with this program and how it is working with my children and we will definitely continue using it for the rest of our review period.
