It’s summer break from school in our house.  But that doesn’t mean my kids don’t do school.  We still always do math and reading.  This summer I’m adding in spelling for some of my kids who aren’t up to grade level.  We’re having some summer vocabulary fun here at our house because they’re loving the Words Rock Online program from EdAlive

Summer Vocabulary Fun

We received 12-month access to Words Rock Online and I could add in as many students as I wanted.  The program is geared towards 5-15 and beyond.  I decided to put kids ranging from age 7 (upcoming 2nd grader) through some special needs teenagers who are below grade level and struggle.  I put a total of seven children into the program though some have definitely been using it more than others!

About the Program

As I mentioned, Words Rock Online is geared towards ages 5-15 and beyond.  The program works to help students with their vocabulary.  They get to play games that adapt the level of the program to their level of learning.  I really like that it’s adaptable so that the students can always feel like they’re making progress and not simply struggling.

Words Rock Online offers several different components ranging from spelling to vocabulary with grammar and punctuation and advanced grammar.  I encourage my children to choose all content so that they are getting more than just one bit of the program.

Each child has their own login and I as the parent have my own login as well.  This is nice so that I can check up on their progress and they can independently work on the program.

EdAlive

This summer vocabulary fun program is part of EdAlive.  Members of the Homeschool Review Crew were offered three different programs within the parent company to choose from for review.  While we chose Words Rock Online we could have also chosen Baggin the Dragon Maths Online or Volcanic Panic Reading Success Online.  The company also has several other programs that they offer up.

Our Thoughts

While sometimes my kids grumble about the school I make them do over the summer they are not grumbling about this summer vocabulary fun because it’s really just a bunch of learning games that test their knowledge and encourages them to learn and get better.

As they progress through the program they are awarded agent cards that they can collect.  It’s definitely more game than it is learning to them!  The program can be used on a phone, a tablet, a pad, a laptop, or a computer so it’s pretty versatile.  You reach it by going to a website so really anything that has a web browser can get you there.

Two Modes

There are two modes that you can play this summer vocabulary fun in.  You get to choose between games mode or questions mode.  I always have them use questions mode first so that they are getting their learning in!  The questions mode gives you ten questions at a time to answer and then you move on.  Each set can earn you a prize or an agent card.

The game mode has you playing against other people.  This is the main reason we don’t use this because I’m not keen on that.  I definitely prefer that they use lesson mode which helps with their learning and keeps other elements out.

A suggestion

One part that I wish was a bit different is that if the kids get the questions incorrect it gives them the correct answer but no explanation as to why their answer was wrong and this one is correct.  So they basically will end up memorizing the correct answer which is okay but I always prefer an explanation be given.

The questions come across as cartoony and captivate the eyes.  It’s colorful which keeps kids interested.  All in all, we’ve really been enjoying this program and I am sure that my kids are going to continue the summer vocabulary fun into our next school year which is fine by me!

We’re so happy to hear that Words Rock Online has been going so well for your summer work!

Thank you for your suggestion too. I brought it up with our Managing Director and he explained that its very hard to explain it as we won’t know why the student got the question incorrect. Thus there could be a wide range of ways to explain the correct answer. It was passed on though for consideration.

Other than that, I am glad that it has gone well so far. 🙂

I hope you all continue to enjoy the remainder of your subscription. Thank you for your review 😀

My kids have truly loved doing school on this. They were very sad to have their subscription come to an end. It was something they volunteered to do!
