True Girl

Do you have tween girls in your home?  We’ve recently been using this new Bible Study for Tweens and it has been a hit in our home.  Through the Homeschool Review Crew, we received Lies Girls Believe and A Mom’s Guide to Lies Girls Believe from True Girl.

Bible Study for Tweens

These are two physical books that we received from True Girl.  I have six teens and three tweens.  Of the teens, three are girls and all three of the tweens are girls.  You could say this book was written for our house.

I love reading.  It’s a favorite pass time of mine.  You’ll find lots of book reviews here on my blog as well.  Through my children seeing me read I have raised a household of readers as well.  My girls love to read, and so do my boys and I’m forever finding them somewhere curled up with a good book.  I’ve even had to retrieve my book from them before so I could finish it.

About the Bible Study for Tweens

Let’s chat about just what these books we received are now.

True Girl as a company began in 2006.  Its main mission is to mothers and daughters closer together and closer to God.  They have meetings throughout the country as well as create a variety of products to meet this goal or mission.

Satan wants us as mothers to have broken relationships with our daughters and for our daughters to not have a relationship with Christ.  Learn more about the specific product we used to see how it can help combat this.

Lies Girls Believe and the companion guide for mothers is a Bible study for tweens (girls) and their mothers.  It is geared towards ages 8-12.   You could use it with slightly older girls as well (in my opinion).  The book can be read independently by young girls but the recommendation is to do it together.

Lies Girls Believe and The Mom’s Guide to Lies Girls Believe are written by Dannah Gresh.

All of the lies are countered with scripture and discussion.  There are 20 key truths taught within this book.  But that’s not all.  There are other things taught as well within this book.  Besides the key truths that are taught to counter the lies, there are also other Bible truths taught.  Like how Satan told the first lie.

Our Thoughts

This book arrived in the mail and I opened it.  Almost before I finished getting it out of the package my children realized I was opening a book and they began to gather around me.  This is how book opening goes in our house.  Everyone hopes that they can be the first to hold and read the new book.  There is just something special about a new book.  It feels and smells different.  I’m not sure which is better, a brand new book or an ancient and antique one.

I’ve navigated the waters of three girls into teenage years now.  On top of that, I now have a 12, 11, and 9-year-old girl.  They’re tweens by the age standards of today.  Growing up I don’t remember tween even being a term.  We were kids or young adults or teenagers.

Part of me wishes we would just do away with the terms.  Sometimes I wonder if children think that when they become teens they’re supposed to act out and test everything.  Maybe if we put a more positive spin on the teenage years we wouldn’t be setting our teens up for some of the trials they face.  Just some random thoughts that I have.

Anyway.

Back to the book.  It’s what we’re here to discuss after all.

We read this book together as a group.  My group of young girls on the cusp of womanhood and I.  I want to say that because of how we parent these lies don’t pertain to my girls.  I mean, after all, they don’t have social media or any of that.  But truthfully, they do apply.  Because inside ourselves we have that voice of Satan telling us these lies.  They may not come out the same as other girls because of how we’re raising our girls, but they are going to still be coming out.

And that’s where a solid foundation of faith and a good Bible study for tweens comes in.

As the mom.

Okay, so my thoughts as the mom going through this with three girls.

I have to admit that I believed these lies as a girl.  So many of them were the root of my insecurities as a child.  And if I’m being totally honest, sometimes I still struggle with believing those lies now as an adult woman.

The mom’s guide follows along with the girl’s guide and also offers some teaching points and notes.   It helps to make sure you have help to teach hard points that maybe you’re not comfortable with or don’t know how to address.  Especially if you might still struggle with those lies as an adult.

As always, have those Bibles open too!  No Bible study for tweens could be complete without a Bible.  So make sure you look up the scripture references, and maybe journal them as you go through the study.

Ideas for Use

The study gives you a rough outline and ideas for use but I thought I’d share how we decided to go through it.

There is an introduction which is great to read on our own.  The first section in the mom’s book is dismantling the lies that moms believe.  Read this on your own.

What we did was I had my girls read their first section.  The first section has three chapters.  Each chapter gets a week.  You’ll find that each chapter has several pages and questions and information.  I felt it was a lot to go through in one night if you really wanted to dive in.

So, each chapter got one week.  Each week wasn’t just one night of reading though.  We set aside three nights a week to work through this.  The first chapter got one week.  Each lie after that got its own week.  There was more than one lie per chapter but I wanted to separate them out.
