Three sisters are thrust into an uncertain future when their wealthy stepfather dies, leaving them with a small annuity to live upon. They find refuge with an aged uncle who convinces them to live in the apartments at Nottingham Castle, whose halls are shrouded in history and secrets, and whose residents watch the sisters with unsettling interest. Chief among them is the handsome property manager, Charles Rushforth, whose quiet authority conceals more than estate affairs and a brooding lodgekeeper who seems to know every hidden passage and whispered rumor…
Charlotte Fieldstone received a parting gift from her late stepfather—a set of valuable pilgrimage badges meant to safeguard them from want. But hidden hands seek the relics, and in the caves beneath the castle, a restless hunger stirs among those who trade in sacred things. At the center stands her uncle, whose charm deceives, and a Duchess, whose influence can tip scales on a whim.
As Charlotte’s uncle is swept into a dangerous quest, tensions rise. Charlotte must depend upon a stranger to shield her from a society whose motives aren’t as they appear. Will Charlotte be able to keep her sisters together as the tempest threatens to tear them apart?
Surrounded by deceit and danger, Charlotte must cling to faith and to one whose protection feels perilously like love…
About the Author of Storm at Nottingham Castle
Ann Fryer loves nothing more than using story and romance to relay the depths and graciousness of a Father who holds us securely in the palms of His hands.
With the gift of God’s time, she writes specifically within the 1800’s time frame with some personal, mud-under-the-nails experience. Her time travel experience has been mind-blowing! Just kidding. Daydreaming about her surroundings from a young age, she’s lived in historic homes most of her life and regularly participates in backyard archaeology. When she’s not writing historical projects, her contemporary novels show a flavor of her forever-passion for all things old. Her father’s coming-of-age memories keep her laughing.
She also spends time enjoying the nuances of being a white mom to three African-American heritage kiddos. Which she will explore on an upcoming website! It’s going to be awesome-sauce. AND HERE IT IS! http://whitemomblackkids.com
Ann, her husband, and children make their home in Small Town, Illinois, where they can hear church bells keep time and tradition.
My Thoughts on Storm at Nottingham Castle
Storm at Nottingham Castle is a wonderful historical fiction novel that I truly enjoyed reading. I can’t wait for book two! And also book three. Because this is a series about the Shrwood Sisters. And there are three of them. So, of course, this has to be a trilogy. Although, I’d take extra books too! Maybe they have daughters?!
Okay, first. I have to tell you something. As I was reading this book, there were a few historical things that made me raise an eyebrow. You see, history is a passion of mine. And I really want things to be accurate. There are a few things, like language and a few behaviors that may not be extremely true or normal for the time period of the novel. They don’t take away from the book, though. They just give my OCD a little shiver.
Oh, and another thing. I have family in England. But not the area this book is set in. And one of the things they adore when they come here is our thunderstorms. They don’t have them in England. Which made me think England didn’t have thunderstorms at all. But imagine my surprise when I researched the setting of this novel, and that area does have thunderstorms! So the author got that right, and I was wrong. Gulp. That’s hard to say.
Onto the book!
In this book, we focus on Charlotte. The other two sisters are in the novel, and we do meet them/see them, but they don’t get center stage. They’ll each get their own book.
The girls all have the same mother but different fathers. You see, each of their fathers, while married to their mother, dies. And then, she remarries because how else is she going to provide for herself and her child/children except to do so? Her fourth marriage though brings them all to the house of Mr Fleming. And he is kind. He is wonderful. He’s the father they all dreamed of having, though he’s only their stepfather. There is also a stepbrother in the picture, though it seems maybe he was mostly out of the house before the girls came along.
Charlotte is the eldest of the three girls. And she takes on the role of figuring out what they should do when Mr Fleming dies. You see, they’re being thrown out by Edmund, the stepbrother. Told to get out before he arrives and to take nothing that isn’t theirs. Which leaves them practically penniless. They’re left with a small annual income.
What are they to do?
Well, out of the woodwork pops an uncle of Charlotte’s that no one knew about. On her dead father’s side. So off the three trundle to live with him in Nottingham Castle. Before you get too excited, it’s just an old castle made into apartments.
There are tunnels underneath the castle that lead out to the town, etc. Those tunnels are now used by the riffraff, and our main hero is set on closing them all. You see, he’s in charge of the castle. And he’s also labelled himself Charlotte’s protector. You see, he delivered the letter “introducing” her to her uncle and asking her to come live with him. He’s immediately struck by her beauty and her innocence.
As Charlotte comes across danger and Charles seems to be involved as well, can they figure out who the bad guys are? Or will they just be pawns in a greater scheme? Is Charlotte’s uncle too good to be true?
Now what?
You’re probably asking what happens! And you should read the book to find out. I really want to just tell you all about it. But that would spoil the read for you. So I’m off to sit on my hands while I wait on the second sister’s story to be told. I’m ready to read it now!
Some thoughts.
This was a good read. I enjoyed the author’s writing style. There is some danger and some suspense. One character finds himself beaten and unconscious. There are some things stolen. People’s things get searched. Bad guys break walls. Bad guys will stop at nothing to find what they want.
The story moved quickly in some spots and slowly in others. There were a few areas where I skipped a few descriptive paragraphs because I already had the gist, and I’m a speed reader, so I skip excess information sometimes. Bad habit or genius, I’ll let you decide.
I will say you’re going to want to pay attention to that Duchess. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of her yet!
