My Thoughts on The Gentlewoman Apprentice

The Gentlewoman Apprentice is a wonderful historical fiction romance novel that is a delight to read. Five stars from me.  Sometimes I just want a romance novel.  Let me be clear that I don’t want a sappy romance novel, and I don’t want a novel that leaves nothing to the imagination.  But I do want a cute novel that has two people who maybe aren’t the best of friends, but they go on to become more than friends.  If there is some friction and strife along the way, that’s wonderful too because just pure sappy is much too boring for this suspense lover.  

Margaret comes from poverty.  From the slums of the East End.  If you don’t know much about London, the East End is pretty much the worst part to be from, especially during this time frame.  But she’s determined.  And she will not stop until she achieves her goal.  So off she goes to a small town to become an apprentice to a tailor. 

Now, said tailor, Peter has some struggles of his own and isn’t too keen on having a female apprentice.  His business is failing, his father is ill, and now he has to have a woman apprentice?  He’s burdened for sure.  

My Thoughts

I love how even though Peter isn’t all for the idea at first, he allows himself to speak from the heart in the anonymous Valentines that he sends to Meg.  She feels seen.  She feels that someone truly knows the her that she keeps hidden.  That’s a powerful feeling.

For me, I love learning.  And this novel did some teaching on the fabrics and dyes of the time period (it takes place in the 1800’s).  I know some of this from having reenacted the Civil War, but that is such a small time frame within the period as well. 

I’m also a seamstress and have made and sold garments. So I could relate to a lot of the story.  Unlike Meg, though, it is common for women to sew.  Well, it’s less common now than it used to be.   

This is part of a series.  I have not read all of the books, but I’m going to go back and do that now!

I loved getting to know the characters.  The plot was wonderful and moved right along at a good speed.  The author is wonderful in her descriptions and wording, so I could see in my mind what I was reading on the page.
