My Thoughts on The Preacher’s Promise

The Preacher’s Promise is a wonderful historical fiction novel about a preacher who was once an outlaw and his past becoming his present.  I have to admit that when I started this novel, I was not expecting what I got. 

I read the description.  So yes, I knew it was about a preacher who had been an outlaw, had murdered and thieved, and had spent time in jail.  But I didn’t expect to feel so connected to him.  I didn’t expect his view on life to resonate with me.  But it did.

This is not a romance novel. Yes, there is romance in it, but that is not the main part.  This, to me, was a suspense novel.  John finds out he has a daughter, that she’s in a town where someone wants revenge on him, and he needs to get her to safety.  He’s worried about her.  And he only wants to keep the people he loves safe.  To do that, he has to keep his distance.  

But what happens when he can’t?  What happens when the love fully overtakes him, and he starts seeing himself as worthy of love?  

Now for some warnings. 

This book contains some nudity.  It’s not sexual, but it’s there.  And I want you to be aware of this.  There is marital rape.  There is domestic violence and abuse.  You’ll also see murder, child abuse, and violence.  The particular violence that needs to be mentioned is murder, in particular the murder of children. 

I’m not giving the book away.  I did actually enjoy this novel, though I was shocked a few times.  This is the second book in a series.  The first book did not have the things that shocked me, and I do feel that the nude scenes could have been left out and the book still made sense and would be wonderful.  

Abbie is a wonderful character, and I liked how she transformed.  Her daughter Susanna is a spunky but impetuous one, and I enjoyed her as well.  I loved that John deserved death but found grace and preaches that to everyone.  He acknowledges his past and what he deserved while telling about what he was given.   

But I think Silas was my favorite character. 

I am docking one star because I can’t get behind the nude scenes and the sensual desires that are described a bit too much, but I really loved the underlying story and message.
