My Thoughts on The Stand-In
Loved it. So many layers. One man, his identity, who he’s made himself, and it’s shattered in one instant. He has an accident and reinvents himself. But which one is his true self? And what will others see?
Let’s start with our characters, Hal and Tamryn. They knew each other in high school but are getting reacquainted since seeing each other at a party. Hal has a disfiguring limp from an accident. And it changed who he is fundamentally. Tamryn has been hurt in relationships before, so she’s taking this very slowly.
Hal is super complex. Why does he want to get to know Tamryn? What are his motivators? And do they change as he gets to know her and who she really is?
The suspense in the romance comes from Hal having his own reasons for getting to know Tamryn and what happens as he actually gets to know her.
This is a Christian romance novel; however, it is not overt. It’s more that, you know, it’s there, but there is nothing that would make the common reader put off by the Christianity of it.
What really makes this novel is the characters, and I’m having a hard time describing them to you because you really just have to read it to find out!
