Fermentools

Homeschool Review Crew

Are you a gardener?  I love to garden and love trying new ways to put up our produce at the end of the season.  Pickles are one thing we make a lot of!  When we received our starter kit from Fermentools I knew I wanted to try some pickles in it first thing.

It was a bit weird for me to only be doing this one tiny quart of pickles with the Fermentools starter kit.  Normally I’m doing a 5-gallon crock full at a time.  While I have done a lot of pickling before I’ve never used anything with this airlock system before.

About the Company

I loved reading about the company and hearing that all of their pieces and products are from the good ol USA.  So much these days comes from China and in this current pandemic world knowing where your package is coming from is very important.

Another fun fact that I enjoyed learning about the family behind this product is that they are a large family with seven children who also homeschool.  That makes this so much more fun for us knowing where our products come from.  I’m a fan of small businesses and supporting them especially in these hard times as my husband is self-employed so we know how difficult that can be.

Fermentools was started in 2009 with its mission of bringing a customizable airlock system to mason jars.  With their unique system oxygen is locked out to let the good bacteria do their thing and the fermentation to happen.  Welcome to the world beneficial probiotics.  In 2013 another family joined the Fermentools team.  They are the homeschooling family with seven children!

Their starter kit comes with:

  • a stainless steel lid
  • rubber gasket to help seal the jar
  • one glass fermentation weight
  • airlock
  • Himalayan Powdered Sea Salt
  • two rubber stoppers, one with a hole and one without a hold
  • an instruction manual that is helpful as well as provides a recipe

Our Thoughts

Gardening and having good veggies for us to eat throughout the year that I know where they come from is super important to me.  I put a lot of veggies in the freezer but I also can quite a bit.  There are some vegetables that just don’t taste good either those ways and those are the ones that I ferment.

Cucumbers and cabbage are the two main vegetables I ferment.  I make them into sauerkraut and pickles.  When I used the Fermentools starter kit to make pickles I just used my normal recipe which was handed down to me from my grandmother.  It’s really simple and we don’t measure anything.  I’m going to do it again but actually measure so that I can share it.  But basically it’s dill, minced garlic, peppercorns, and salt.  If you have an extra onion to throw in that’s good too.

Because my garden is in the ground but not producing yet I did purchase some pickling cucumbers to work up into pickles.  I can’t wait until I have my own!  We planted four rows of cucumbers so hopefully, I have enough.  My kids love to just eat them as a snack too.

When we eat pickles it’s very common for us to go through a whole gallon at once.  My plan is to use this new kit to start making gallon jars of pickles.  I will then put them in the back of our refrigerator to let them sit for several months and then we can pull them out and eat them.  To do this I plan on buying a few more weights to use as the one weight won’t work in and of itself in my wide mouth gallon jars.

I 100% agree with the family behind the Fermentools kits in that ferments are so good for us.  We do sourdough(gluten-free), kombucha, sauerkraut, fermented pickles, etc as great probiotic boosts for our family!  The pickles and later the sauerkraut got to stay in my ferments corner of the kitchen.  On the far end of my kitchen counter away from all-natural light is where my ferments hang out.  I think everyone enjoyed the new company.

This is a company I can recommend and stand behind.  I hope you give them a try.  They’re offering a coupon code for the next month or so which I have shared below.  Enjoy!
