Spelling You See Review
I have had trouble finding a perfect spelling curriculum for my kids.  Maybe I’m too picky.  We recently got the chance to review Spelling You See and give it a go.  We received the  Spelling You See:  Wild Tales(Level C)  to use with our kiddos.  Each level contains a teachers handbook and a student book.  They are softcover books and perfect for writing in and taking along with you.

The concept of Spelling You See if really fairly simple.  Your child does it daily, but they only do a little bit per day.  So, it’s not overwhelming.  It’s a simple one or two pages.  They learn a concept on page one and on page two they do copywork and reuse the new concept.  That’s it.  Simple, easy, and not enough to overwhelm most children.

Spelling You See integrates writing, reading, speaking, and listening into each daily activity that your child does.  Because it doesn’t do grade levels, the books are divided by the different stages of learning.  Level A teaches letter sound correspondence.  Level B teaches the rudimentary skill building.  Level C(which we received) teaches more of the skill building using copywork and dictation.  Level D and E both work on vocabulary and  spelling skills.

This is a new series of spelling books from the company who makes Math-U-See.  They have levels A-E.  I received Level C which is right in the middle.  The student book is $30 and the instructor’s book is $14.  While these are not geared towards a certain grade level, I would say that they are definitely early elementary.  I originally was planning on using Level C with my 2nd graders.  I found after we received the books that it was going to be a bit too easy for them and bumped it down to my 1st graders who really enjoyed it.  It is more of a learning level than an age or grade level relevant product.  You really just have to gauge what level is best for your child by where they are.

Now, how does this work if you’ve used other products before.  We had no problem making the switch from the spelling book we were using to this one.  There was no confusion.  It was self explanatory and gave my kids all the information they needed to do the work asked of them.  I have to say that though it used cute nursery rhymes and then moved to animal information, I would have preferred that it use Bible verses for the kids.  Just a silly little my opinion type thing, but I like to take every chance I can get to immerse my children in the Word.  There is nothing wrong with the copywork.  My kids liked it.  It was simple and easy for them to use which was the point.

So, did we like this curriculum?  Yes we did enjoy it.  My kids used it and they learned from it.  It is really only a short amount of time per day which I loved.  It requires little teaching and even less prep time by me.  I’m finding that I really like things that I don’t have to spend hours preparing for before even teaching it to my children.  I think this is perfect for some of my kids who struggle to learn and need something that they can do daily and not be overwhelmed with.  A lo t of curriculums throw too much at them at once and with their learning disabilities they just cannot take it.  Having small chunks and only having to do one or two pages a day really helps them.  They were able to breeze through this book.  If I had used it with the age that I had intended to first use this book with, it would have been too simple and they would have gone through the book very quickly because they would have wanted to do the whole book in the first week.
