Geography for Kids
Let’s Go Geography, Year 2
Homeschool Review Crew
Geography is a fun subject, but geography for kids can be hard to teach sometimes. For me, it’s not necessarily that my kids don’t like geography as it is that I don’t know how much is too much. What should I teach them? Which facts about each country should I include? Let’s Go Geography, Year 2 covers lots of fun locations to visit. Not only is it fun to use it’s very educational at the same time. And the best part! I didn’t have to create it on my own!
Let’s Go Geography was very kind in giving us two years access to their year 2 coursework. I have a feeling it may take us that long to get through all the wonderful information too!
About the Program
This program covers 32 weeks of geography throughout the world. Each week covers one lesson. You can make the lesson last more than one week or even do more than one lesson per week if you so wish.
Let’s Go Geography is designed for grades Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. While this is the age limit other ages can and do (at least in our house) enjoy this program as well. It’s all online. You print off anything that you need but there are also online resources to use as well.
Each lesson contains six different chapters to be used with the lesson or country you’re studying.
Learn More about the Chapters
Chapter 1: Map it! This is pretty self-explanatory. You’re going to have a map of the country that you can study, plus learn lots of fun but basic facts about that stop in your tour of the world! My kids love the maps and see how each country has its own flag, etc.
For Chapter 2: The Flag. Chapter 2 shows you the flag of the country. We do chapter 1 and 2 on the same day as for us that works really well. There are free printables and each flag can be added to your travel journal. For us, the travel journal is a three-ring binder. Read in our thoughts how we’re doing this.
Chapter 3: The Music. This is a part of studying a country that I had never thought to include. It’s also one of our favorite parts! These are safe viewing mode videos so you don’t have to worry about questionable content or preview.
On to Chapter 4: Let’s Explore! How fun! In Let’s Explore you literally do just that. You’re going to learn fascinating facts about the country, and see some of the fun sights that you might want to visit if you ever were to go to that country. Another fun fact you learn is about the food of a country which can be loads of fun and also rather tasty.
Chapter 5: Create! These are fun hands-on activities with step by step instructions so they’re easy to do.
The last chapter is Chapter 6: Printables. This is your notebooking pages, flags for the journal, coloring pages, and much more.
There are currently two years of Let’s Go Geography with Year 3 in the works! You can purchase yearly subscriptions or even now a lifetime subscription as well.
Our Thoughts
While it works best to use these lessons in the order you can skip around as you want as well. We are using a curriculum that does cover a few continents so we grabbed those out of order as we needed them to supplement our curriculum. But otherwise, we’ve been using this in order.
We have a travel journal for each child doing this unit. The travel journal is a three-ring binder. Each country gets a tab within the journal and into that tab goes a copy of the map, the flag, and any fun things we do when covering the unit.
As I stated above, we did go through it in order mostly. One lesson we did skip around to use with our regular curriculum is The UK, England. Our curriculum was studying Europe so this was a great little unit to add-in.
Let’s do a step by step.
When you access your lesson you will click on the week and lesson title.
Doing that takes you to the above page where you can click to download the entire lesson. You can then save it to your computer or simply print off and use/ read it on the computer. I downloaded each week and labelled it with Geography for Kids: place visiting so we can come back and revisit if we want without having to use the internet. Living out in the middle of nowhere we often have days with no internet access.
From there you can pick and choose what you’re going to do. I do like to print off the itinerary type page which shows you what you’re going to do or the six chapters discussed above. Then each child can check off the boxes as they go through which is fun and satisfying.
I love how pretty these are and that they’re so colorful but also simple. It’s not cluttered and so chock full that kids could have sensory overload.
There are fun videos to watch and music to listen to. Those are clickable links which makes it really easy to use. I thought the craft for England was very cute but did not include a lot of things that I normally keep on hand within our house and craft closet.
There is a section with library books that you can get to supplement the study which is nice because I normally have to search and find those on my own. It’s nice to not have to search for stuff on my own for a change!
Kids Thoughts
My kids have really enjoyed this and visiting different areas of the world. It does feel like you’re visiting even though you never leave your house. Someday they’d love to actually visit all these places now as would I. In fact, a fun assignment I’m giving them in conjunction with Geography is to tell me the one place they’d like to vacation if they could go anywhere! Sounds fun to me! But they have to research and make a small report for me on that place. I think this would be a fun review activity to do after you’re through all the geography course as well.
My kids range from 15 years down to 15 months. I gave my older ones the option of participating or not and they all decided to at least sit in on the fun. They might not have done all the crafts or colored all the maps/flags but they did still pick up some fun new facts that they didn’t know before. The only child under the age limit who participated was my three year old and he loved it! So I would say that it can safely be used for Preschool as well as long as you cater down and don’t expect them to do the writing and reading parts.
Our family gives this a thumbs up and a five out of five stars. The only things we might change are adding in a few more fun places to visit and possibly diving deeper for the older grades. Diving deeper is more a mom thing than a kid thing as my kids were pleased with the amount of fun and study this had. This is definitely a geography for kids hit in our house!
One of our Crafts
My kids were working on these for the craft section and decided that they had to color the ENTIRE map. We compromised by making sure the continent mentioned was at least colored in marker so it stood out. My kids really like to color!
As you can tell my kids also like to use a lot of color when coloring! My older kids did not really care about the coloring but my younger ones really enjoyed making these.
Some kids are more advanced in their coloring abilities than others. It always makes me laugh how some kids color every single bit of white and others are like I colored over the words so I’m done now.
