Join us as we chat about how important it is for kids to learn to love God. This praise devotional for kids that we recently have gotten to review is wonderful. Let me introduce you to Christian Focus which is a subdivision of Christian Focus Publications. They sent us a hardback copy of Psalms for My Day A child’s Praise Devotional. Written by Carine MacKenzie and Alec Motyer with Illustrations by Catherine Pape.
About the Book
Psalms for My Day is geared to be read to children ages four to six with them able to read it on their own from ages seven through eleven. This book contains all 31 Psalms in a form easily understood by children. The entire Psalm is not always written out though. When the whole Psalm is not used it will tell you which verses are used.
Each Psalm has a two-page spread. Page one is the Psalm written out in a version of the Bible that was created going back to the Hebrew and translating it into words that are understandable to a child but keeping the context the same. The second page offers a short praise devotional and prayer to be used with your child.
The prayer offered with each Psalm is to be prayed after the devotional is read. It sums up the theme of the Psalm and praises God.
Our Thoughts
This book is very pretty. We received a hardcover copy of the book with a pretty red ribbon to be used as a bookmark so you can easily find your spot. The illustrations are very pretty and give it almost a watercolour quality. Because it is geared to children the language is in such a way that the young ones can easily understand it.
At the end of the book is a short section of new words so if you come across a word that your child might not know you can easily flip back and see if it is listed on the list.
I would like to know what the official Bible translation is. We tend to use King James Version in our home and this is definitely not that. It is easy for children to understand though. For us, we keep our Bible with us when we read our devotional and read the entire chapter out of our Bible as well before focusing in on the words in the praise devotional.
Within the beginning of this book, it does talk about the Bible translation and how it came about which I thought was nice.
We really have enjoyed using this praise devotional and I can see it remaining on our shelf for future use. I would have liked to see a little less skipping around with the Psalms. Maybe have all of the Psalms covered in a larger book.
After reading the introduction to the book I felt that we should start doing more singing of the Psalms in our home. It reminded me of how that is how David originally intended them when he wrote them, they were sung as songs of praise.
