Value of Money
Buck Academy
Homeschool Review Crew
Do your children understand the value of money? Have you worked on teaching them about saving? Do they understand how much a dollar is worth? Here is where Buck Academy can step in and help. They want to teach your child the value of money, especially a “buck”, outside of math class in third grade.
We received two books from Buck Academy. The first is BUCK Making Cents for ages 5-10. And the second book is Baby BUCK, How Much Am I. . . for ages 0-4. I have five children within these two age ranges plus one who just turned 11 but is behind academically due to a few learning disabilities.
About the Books
Buck Academy is the brainchild of husband and wife team Dustin and Febyolla Goss. Dustin is responsible for the writing while Febyolla does the illustrations. These books are cute and age-appropriate while also making learning the value of money fun.
BUCK Making Cents is for ages 5-10 and has small chapters to help your child learn about the value of a dollar and the different ways that it is possible to make a dollar from change or cents. One of the main emphases of the book is that money is a tool not the purpose of life. It’s not all about hoarding. But at the same time, they share how to be smart with your money.
The three chapters of the book are
- Making Cents of Buck
- How Many Cents Can a Buck Buy
- Memory Bank
In the end, there are some fun facts about money plus questions to test comprehension.
Baby BUCK How Much Am I . . . is a board book. It consists of 11 pages. Each coin is introduced. There are lift-the-flaps and shiny coins to keep little ones entertained and help them love the book.
We also received a short little pamphlet about Quick Cents to a BUCK which is a fast and furious cheat version of the other book. Maybe a refresher course if you will.
Our Thoughts
So much fun! I loved these books for having my children learn about money. Money and counting out change is always something that my kids struggle with and I’m not sure why. These books are great to help teach that from a very young age instead of waiting for the traditional teaching in a math lesson.
The books are of good quality with hardcovers. My kids can be hard on books sometimes and quality books hold up better for sure.
We loved the cute illustrations. I have kids all over the range in and out of the range actually. My younger kids loved the board book. They are 2 and 5. I have a newborn too who sat with us while we read who was even intrigued by the shiny bits.
For the regular hardcover book, I had children ages 8-11 reading it. Those are the age at which the book is targeted and honestly the ones who still need help with money and value.
These are books that we will be keeping in our home and using over and over again. Already I have reached for them to help explain concepts when the kids are having trouble in their math with making sure they’re choosing the right coins. We have a ziplock bag with coins in it to go with the books as well so they can actually touch and feel and make the change themselves as well.
