About the Curriculum

Have you ever wanted your child to learn a foreign language?  Do your younger children want to learn a language like their older siblings?

The answer to that question in our house is yes, yes they do!  Enter Whistlefritz and their French for kids.  It is designed especially for young children ages 1-7.  Roughly preschool through second grade.

I have two in that age range.  It feels so weird to only have two in there!  But the younger one is eight months and the closest to that is eight years on the top end.  Now I will say that my eight-year-old and also my developmentally delayed eleven-year-old used this curriculum alongside my five and three-year-olds.

Learning a second language during this developmental stage can really help improve the critical thinking skills of your child.

Whistlefritz was created by a mom much like you and me who wanted to teach her children Spanish.  From there it escalated into another language and is available for both schools and homeschools.  If you’re looking to make learning a language fun then this curriculum is for you.

The lessons are taught in the same way that you learn your native language.  Through hearing and seeing instead of by reading and writing.  The videos are fun and colorful and the curriculum is hands-on and engaging.

Our Thoughts on French for Kids

I love this program.  We have used their Spanish curriculum before and I was excited to try out the French for kids.  My older children are using a different program to learn languages and most have chosen either French or French Canadian, because of this my five-year-old boy is loving that he is learning French just like his big brothers.

Using this program has been a fun highlight for my younger crew and they are excited to keep learning and using the curriculum.  I have been using the program with four children.  Two are within the actual prescribed age range but all are within the prescribed grade levels of preschool through second grade.

The four in the program are 3, 5, 8, and 11(with developmental delays).  We have been using the curriculum for a few weeks now and using it 4-5 days a week.

French for Kids

There are 40 lessons within the lesson book.  If you use the home educator lesson plans you also get a few extra lessons to do before starting the book of lessons.

The activities are well laid out and everything you need is here, minus basic school supplies like markers and glue etc.  They are easy for you as the parent to understand and do with your child while also be simple and easy for the child to do.

Probably our favorite part is the DVD lessons.  They are fun and funny plus easy to listen to and watch.  They are catchy and the music gets stuck in your head.  But the best part is how easy it is picked up and your child is able to sing and say along.

The DVDs and CDs are within the same cardboard case.  There are three cases within the collection but a total of 4 DVDs and 3 CDs.  I found it easy to find the one we needed and the spot on it as well.

Also within the set, you have a set of matching cards.

These contain lots of different words and pictures.  They correspond with the lessons and even if your child doesn’t know the word yet they will be able to match the pictures and you can say the word while they do it.  Before you know it you’ll all know the words!

French for Kids

My kids are loving learning a new language.  French for kids is easy to use and fun for all ages.  I’ve found my older kids are hanging around to watch along with the younger kids even though they’re well above the suggested age range.

And let’s face it.

I’m learning too.

While I have taken some foreign language courses over the years I really can’t say that I have retained a lot of it but learning and using it around the house with my children is definitely helping cement the language in a way that my college courses did not.
