Reading Eggs

If you have young children who want to do school and love playing games this is for you.  Reading Eggs is a fun online curriculum that teaches children to read using games and videos.  We’ve been fans of reading eggs for a while now.  Recently some changes have happened that made reading eggs for multiple ages instead of just preschool through children who can read.  We received a year subscription through the Homeschool Review Crew.

About Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is a fun interactive online curriculum that works with children to learn to read.  It teaches phonics and the alphabet through fun song and game-type characters who are bright and colorful as well as ones that have vivid personalities and catchy tunes.

The program has earned many awards over the years and continues to add and evolve its program to make it the best it possibly can be.  This evolution has added different subprograms in over the years including such topics as fast phonics and math and grammar.

Whether your child needs to learn or simply improve their skills this program will work for you.  Reading Eggs is an interactive program.  It moves your child forward at their own pace.  Just because they complete a lesson doesn’t mean they move on.  It is mastery-based so they have to do well and show mastery before they move forward onto the next lesson.

The Programs

There are four main programs within Reading Eggs.  These are Reading Eggs, Reading Eggs Junior, Fast Phonics, and Reading Eggspress.  Also through their program is Mathseeds geared towards ages 3-9.  These programs are for ages 2-13.  There is a placement test to use when you first start that helps you find the correct starting point.  Again, they’re interactive and individually geared to your child.

There is one sign-in for each family.  Once you sign into your account there is a parent dashboard that tells you where your child is at, what they’ve mastered or completed, etc.

From there each child has their own avatar and spot to get to their account.  Once in their person, they get to decide which level they are working on that day.  The program suggests which they should start with and after they take the placement test it will take them to their spot.

After signing in they choose which program to start in.  I always have my kids start with the core reading eggs.  My preschooler does the junior level.  Inside their program, they have a map and they click on the lesson they need for the day.  It’s fairly easy to use and my kids can all do it from a login on their own!

The maps are my kid’s favorite!  Once they finish the lesson they get an egg to open!

Our Thoughts

We have been users of Reading Eggs for several years now.  We were first introduced to them through the Homeschool Review Crew and have maintained (and paid for) a membership since then.  My kids love it!  They’re always asking to do their school.  My three-year-old particularly loves Reggie Boxes.

I love that this program is great for all children.  I have a total of four children using this program currently.  They are 3, 6, 9, and 12.  The 12-year-old has dyslexia and other developmental delays that make her a much younger learning age than her physical age.  I have found that they all love the program so much!  The maps are especially intriguing for some of them.  They love seeing what new character is going to pop out of their eggs each time.

Quick Recap:

My 3-year-old is in the preschool level or the Reading Eggs Junior.  Her learning activities are more game-like and center around colors, matching, and letter recognition.  She also works on tracing letters which is fun.  Basically, it’s fun and it’s learning.  There is also a section that lets her play videos and games.  The key here is they are also educational so it’s a win for all! Her favorite is the Reggie Boxes.  She uses the program for probably 15 minutes a day.

My 6-year-old is doing 1st grade this year in homeschool and uses the regular Reading Eggs.  He has been using it for the last year and is doing amazing!  Liam also uses the MathSeeds program.  He does require some help because he’s into activities that require him to read and sometimes the directions are confusing for him. I should add he completed Reading Eggs Junior first before moving to this program. So I try to be near him so he can ask questions if he has them.

For my 9 year old she is doing Fast Phonics and Reading Eggspress.  She’s doing third-grade level in our homeschool and we’re working on reading comprehension as well as spelling.

The fourth child I have in the program is 12 years old but dyslexic and developmentally delayed.  Her school consists of the original Reading Eggs (we’re on our second time through as she likes to guess and guess until she gets it correct but does not remember what she did) and Mathseeds.  I would say that she has made progress with the program but that she definitely goes at a much slower pace and does need more supervision than my other children.

Parent thoughts:

As a parent, I love this program.  It takes some of the burdens of teaching off of me and provides a safe spot for my kids to do their schoolwork.  My kids use the program through an app on their kid’s kindle.  I love that I can have parental control over their program and that I can let them do this on their own unless they need help.

If you need a reading program for your child I highly suggest this one!  We have used it for half of our kids.  We love it so much that we pay for our subscription and each of my kids starts using it when they turn 3!
