Beyond the Stick Figure Art School

Are you like me?  I can’t draw.  Really, I’m only good at stick figures and I make a very flat but tolerable tulip shape.  That’s the extent of my drawing.  Because of this, I was excited about a new art for anyone type program to review.  We, through the Homeschool Review Crew, recently got a subscription to Beyond the Stick Figure Art School.  We received access to Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course PLUS 3 Bonus Courses.

This course is designed to be used daily and to last a full year of school.  You can work with that and tweak it to how you want to use it as you will have access to the course.  Within the course are 55 drawing lessons, 15 pen and ink lessons, 52 lessons in watercolor, and 24 lessons in acrylic.  There are also 30 lessons in 3D design.

You will walk through five different areas of art learning through videos and then doing on your own.  The owner and teacher of art for anyone is a lovely woman named Sally.  She received her training at Loughborough College of Art and Design in England.  But now she’s living in America, married, mother to 8 children whom she also homeschools.

Don’t worry about whether you have the right supplies either.  There will be supply lists provided as well as worksheets to practice what you’re learning.  This course is for all ages to have fun and learn how to “do art”.

The videos and short and concise ranging from just over two minutes to six minutes in length each.

Our Thoughts

Art for Anyone

I will always be the first to tell you that I’m horrible at art.  Like really really bad can’t draw a straight line bad.  This has me not hating art though.  I have always loathed trying to teach my children art.  It’s not for me.  I’m one of those who say that art is NOT for everyone!  But this new program has taught me that maybe art for anyone is possible.

With this program, I don’t have prep work except for making sure we have the art supplies on hand.  Some of the items were things I did already own but other things I had to order before we could start those sections.  I love that the videos are labelled.  So you start out with a section titled Drawing Part 1 and then those have subheadings like Day 1, Day 2, etc.  It’s so nice to know that this is how these are supposed to be done.  No guesswork for me!

Another part that I enjoyed was that if there is a workbook or worksheet available to download and practice on, they’re linked right there on that lesson.  So, normally I would print them before we watched the lesson so that they were there for my children to use as we were doing the lesson or just after while it was fresh in their minds.

The videos are short and to the point which I like.  There are not a lot of technical terms that you have to learn and workaround.  This is done in such a way that art really can be for anyone because everyone can understand this.  I’m still not wonderful at art but even I can do this!

I liked knowing how many parts there were total.  When I went in to start looking through the videos I noticed that there are 196 steps.  For a planner like me, this is nice to know.  Not all of these are for everyone to watch though.  There are some for mom only videos to watch which are basically talking about what is going on in that section and what you’re going to be needing.

The one thing I did not like quite so much is that there are some lessons that you need to upload things.  An assignment has to be uploaded to move on.  I have trouble uploading things and getting things onto our computer so that was probably the most difficult part for me.  All lessons must be done in order and marked as complete before you can venture on to the next one.

One part that I’m not sure whether I love or not is how specific the art supply list is.  The products can get expensive which with a big family isn’t always doable.  So, for this review, I bought the linked products for my older children but just used what we had on hand for the younger children wanting to draw as well.  If I knew the child would be careful with the products then they could use the “correct” ones while the three-year-old NEVER got to use the linked things the 15-year-old ALWAYS did.  At one point in time, my fifteen years old wanted to be an artist so she is very conscientious about how she treats art supplies.  Now she’s going to be a veterinarian which is really an art form all in itself.

The takeaway, definitely spend the money on the linked and recommended items.  They will be the difference between ahh okay and wow that’s good art work.
