Spelling is just one of those areas in our homeschool that my kids don’t excel at.  Maybe I haven’t spent enough time focusing on it but we were excited to add this fun editable spelling curriculum to our homeschool this semester.  Superstar Spelling is the product of The Crafty Classroom.  This is a PDF download that you can edit and customize for your child and use over and over again.  There are lots of fun activities and pages to go with it.

About The Program

The Crafty Classroom offers a variety of programs that you can use to help make homeschooling easier.  One of those products which we received is Superstar Spelling.  This is a curriculum to help you and your child make spelling easier.  It’s an editable spelling curriculum used for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.  You can also use it for older if they are delayed and enjoy doing these types of activities still.

Superstar spelling comes as a PDF download that you then open inside an Adobe Acrobat Reader so you can edit and save your spelling lists and all of the fun pages that come with it.

This program automatically gives you worksheets for every day of the week that are tailored to the spelling list you provide.  You can do up to 20 words at a time. This is designed to be used over five days each week for maximum knowledge.  I do think you can tweak it to a four-day school week if that is what you do in your homeschool though we didn’t do that.  We just went ahead and did spelling on that fifth day along with our normal math and reading.

Activities

There are six downloadable activity pages per day of the week for a total of thirty pages each week.  They cover a variety of activities and different approaches so that there truly is something to interest everyone.  With this program, you get a multi-sensory type approach.  Some worksheets focus on sign language while others are simply writing the word and others involve robots or target practice.

Needless to say, there really is something for everyone and my kids have been enjoying them.  This is a good option if you have multiple children in this age range and like the freedom to create your own spelling lists and print your own pages.

Most of the pages print in black and white though ones meant to be laminated or put in a sheet protector do print in color.

Our Thoughts on this Editable Spelling Curriculum

Okay, let’s be honest here.  I have issues with technology.  I’m sure you couldn’t guess that considering I blog, but I’ve never used Adobe before.  You need Adobe Acrobat Reader for this program.  Downloading it was super easy but it did take me a bit to figure out how to edit the pages.  The first time I used it I skipped the word list page and just added the words individually to the worksheets I wanted to use.  Oops.  Once I realized it would autofill for me time went much faster!

Once I got that bit of school for mom out of the way it was smooth sailing.

This editable spelling curriculum is wonderful for when you have more than one child in the K-5 grade range and don’t want to spend a fortune in spelling curriculum.  You can purchase the program for one fee and then use it as much as you want because you then own the editable ebook.

If you ask my boys who were using this for some 5th-grade spelling words they really loved the battleship pages.  In fact, they had to create cardboard ships to put their pages on and make their own little ships to sink.  It was really rather interesting to watch them get into their school because before they hated spelling and wanted nothing to do with it.

This is actually the board for when we were working on double vowels making the long E sound with my daughter.  My older kids would take turns playing the game with her and she got to play it twice.  Once she’d be the first set of words and once she’d be the second set of words.  That allowed other siblings to get to play with her and it helped to reinforce their spelling as well.

These guys are 12 and 13.  The 12-year-old works at mostly a 6th-grade level but he does need spelling help.  He loves to read though!  My 13-year-old is delayed and works all over the board in different subjects.  I gave him the same words as his brother though and that seemed to work well as they got competitive with the spelling bees and games together.

My kindergarten kiddo really loved the dot marker games.  Of course, our dot markers quickly went missing or quit working so then he had to just use regular markers to color in the circles but he still loved that!

Another child I had using the program is a first grader and her favorite was the super sleuth games where you have to decode the words and figure out what pictures match which letters.  It was fun to watch her do those and see her eyes light up as she solved the puzzles.

Each child is so different in how they learn well that I enjoyed being able to tailor the worksheets to each child’s needs and personal preferences.
