Do you have kids who love to read?  My kids do.  They come by it honestly as I’m an avid book reader and if you check over half the posts on this blog are book reviews from me.   One of my goals in raising children is to raise readers.  Recently they’ve all been taking turns reading Archer and Zowie by Hans Bluedorn.  We received a paperback copy of the book in conjunction with the Homeschool Review Crew.

About the Book

This book is great for anyone over the age of 7 but really geared towards middle and high school students.  Adults can enjoy the book as well.  Really this is just a good all-around book that you can read to any age even those who can’t read on their own yet.

The main themes in this book are self-esteem and friendship.  So not only is it a good book teaching about essential themes but also it’s going to keep your child enthralled as it takes them on a sci-fi adventure!

What happens in the book you might ask?

Well.  Let me tell you!

In Archer and Zowie we have two best friends who are working on inventing things in the kitchen.  Things go a bit wrong when anti-matter is involved.  Now the microwave can do unique things like order sandwiches.  But it also does weird things like want to kill them!

Our Thoughts on Archer and Zowie

My kids loved this book.  I have six teenagers ages thirteen through sixteen and they immediately had the book as soon as it arrived.  It made the rounds until they’d all read it.  I thought at this point that I would be able to use it as a read aloud.  We haven’t started school officially yet for fall semester but we never stop doing math and reading.  They are our year round subjects.

But I couldn’t find the book when I went to get it the morning I was going to start it.  It seems my 10 year old had taken it.  After she finished it I was finally able to use it as a read aloud book for our school morning time.

Not only did my big kids still sit to listen even though they’d already read it, but my little kids absolutely adored it as well.  Everyone wanted me to read just one more chapter or just a bit more.  It definitely did not take us long to finish reading the book.

The cover is colorful and eye catching.  In total the book is 233 pages long.  Throughout the book are drawings and illustrations as well that capture the attention.  The illustrations are black and white and allow for the imagination to work while giving a starting point.  I like the scattered drawings for helping younger kids see what’s going on but they also give older kids a reference point for where to take their imaginations.

My kids are definitely interested in a sequel to this book!

If you read the introduction to the book you will immediately need to go look at all the chapter titles and write them out because the author tells you that they tell you what is happening in the book.  Don’t ask how I know.  Yes we did write down all the chapter titles to see what they said together.  Yes we did it before we read the book.
