Math Rider

My kids don’t get to play computer games.  Unless they’re school computer games that is.  And they were super excited to add another school game to their list with this math game.  Math Rider offered a permanent license to their math game to reviewers on the Homeschool Review Crew and we decided to try it out. Math Rider comes from Sharper Edge International Pty Ltd.  The permanent license is currently priced at $47.

About the Game

Math Rider is a download.  You will get links sent to download to your computer.  Once downloaded you can set it up for how many children you want and get them started.  This program only works on actual computers currently so we downloaded it to the laptop that has Windows on it.

Download was quick and simple and very self-explanatory.  Setting up children’s accounts was also quick and easy.  You simply put in the child’s name and set up their account.  I added in eight children and it did not tell me I had my limit.

There is only one download for the entire family.  They then just change the user when they get on to play their game.  The game helps with math facts.

By the time your child masters the game, they will have learned their math facts of 1-12 in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Great for ages K-6 or anyone who struggles with learning math facts.  It’s recommended for ages 7-12 but my five-year-old is really loving playing it too.

The math game makes learning facts fun by having children do quests while riding a horse through a magical land.  I can definitely see this appealing to lots of ages.

The game adjusts to what your child learns so that they are constantly being challenged.  Parents don’t need to be involved besides setting the game up and getting their child started.  You can adjust parts for your child though such as just addition and subtraction for younger children.

Game Specifics

The game starts off slow.  You move at a slow walk and by the time you have mastered it all you’re at a full gallop.  The speed increases as your proficiency in math increases.  Quests contain rides and each ride contains around 30 questions.  When the quest is completed rewards are given.

After each section of the quest, you get a section where it shows your score.

When you’re done looking at your score you can go to the quest map that shows you the areas you still need to travel to and where you’ve been to complete the quest.  I like that each quest comes with a story of where and why and how you’re going to do it.  And it includes lots of math words too!

Our Thoughts

I did use this for “off ages” because I have some older children who still struggle with some of their math facts and I also put my five-year-old into it as well.  So instead of ages 7-12, I have ages 5-16.  We are a farm family who has real horses to ride and my kids thought this math game where they ride horses around on quests sounded really fun!  We love medieval everything so that probably helped pique their interest.  And also maybe the fact that computer time is strictly school no computer games allowed. . . except for school ones.

Talk about fun!  My kids have a rotating schedule of who gets to play the game first on what days and we have a timer so that nobody gets a longer game time than anyone else.  Plus since this only works on laptops and not tablets we only have one computer it could go on.  And that computer is also our school computer for a high schooler doing a DVD science course.  It has taken a lot of planning and scheduling on my end to enjoy this game.

I have a total of eight children using the program.  Most of them can use it independently.  I do have to help the five year old and one of the 11-year-olds as they are not quite as computer savvy as the others and have trouble without a bit of encouragement and guidance.  Of course, my kids who are too old for the program also love to help the younger ones too.

It’s safe for me to say that this is a hit!  My kids love the game and really wish that I would get more computers or laptops to put it on so that they can play more than one at a time and for longer stretches.  I highly recommend this math game if you’re looking for a less parent-intensive, and more fun than drilling the facts, way to learn math facts for your kids.
