Do you read biographies in your homeschool?  I love including good books for my kids and YWAM Publishing offers lots of really good ones through their two series: Heroes of History and Christian Heroes Then and Now.  We recently received a copy of Heroes of History: William Bradford: Plymouth’s Rock by Janet and Geoff Benge for a review.

We personally have purchased the entire Christian Heroes Then and Now series from YWAM Publishing because we love them so much and really utilize them in our homeschool.  For our review, we chose the book on William Bradford to add to our history lessons.  Through genealogy, we have recently learned that another member of the Plymouth settlement was part of my husband’s line so this has made my children want to learn more.

About YWAM Publishing

YWAM Publishing has lots of biographies to help make history a bit more exciting for children.  In their Heroes of History series, they have 29 titles to choose from.  They start their biographies in childhood so you can see what their childhood was like and how it worked to shape their adult lives as well.

We received a physical paperback copy of the book.  In addition to our physical book, we received a download of a study guide to go with our book.  The study guide should be used with the book to help increase the amount of information that is retained and also increase the understanding of what is being read.

Within the study guide, there are activities and questions to be done.  The activities delve into the subjects of geography, science, possible field trips, family game ideas, and even cooking suggestions.  There is something for everyone within the study guide.

Our Thoughts on William Bradford

While we have studied the Colonial time period we haven’t spent a lot of time on the individual people who were part of it.  I thought adding a study on William Bradford would be a good idea.

We read this book as a read-aloud within our whole family.  Before we could do that though I had to find the book as children had already taken it off the shelf and several had already read it!  I’m not kidding when I say that my kids love these books from YWAM Publishing.  They’re great to add to your history curriculum.

While we did not use the study guide for all of the children I did ask the kids reading it on their own to slow down a bit and do it for me.  I did not tell them they had a set time to read the book but did instead ask them to take a break and read over/answer some of the questions that were in the study guide.  I feel that that is a good way to get older children(middle school and high school levels) to grasp a bit more from the book as well as comprehend a bit more.

For our read-aloud of the book, I had ages 2 through 16 sitting around listening as I was reading.  While the two-year-old didn’t get a lot from it probably she did seem to enjoy sitting and listening to me read.  We do a lot of reading aloud as part of our homeschool and all of my children enjoy being read to.
