An ABC-Book for Toddlers #hsreviews
After visiting my blog you’ll know that I love to read. I also believe that reading to your children is an extremely important part of development. So I was thrilled to be able to review S is for Smiling Sunrise from WordsBright. This cute little book is an ABC-Book for toddlers. You can also use it with your preschoolers or older children as they can read it on their own.
For the purposes of this review I received a copy of this book with a print out of the Teacher’s guide and a CD with the ABC song on it.
WordsBright is a small independent publisher started in 2013 and located in California. What stands out to me about this company is that they are committed to education and to do this through education by making it fun. Thus, this cute fun little ABC-Book for toddlers. The author of S is for Smiling Sunrise is Vick Wadhwa. He grew up in India with no television but plenty of books! He was lucky to have a library close run by Jesuit missionaries. This guy is a scientist of a high degree who decided to write an early education book largely due to his daughter. From the site it seems that he shall be continuing to pursue this and write more books in the future.
A neat thing that I noticed when first reading our S is for Smiling Sunrise book was that it says at least 10% of the net earnings from the sales of this book will be given to projects for the health and education of disadvantaged children. That is a noble thing to do. At the beginning of the book it does say it is for ages 3 and up. I used it with my almost 2-year-old as well as my two 4 year olds. None of them can read on their own yet. Of course, my readers also enjoyed the book by reading it for themselves and to their siblings.
Another thing to mention is that you can go to the website and download an MP3 of a song to go with the book to help your child learn their ABC’s. They also have a teacher’s or parent’s guide that can be printed to go along with the book to enhance what you and your child can do with and take from this book. The teacher’s guide or teaching tips as it’s called on the website can be printed off as either pre-K or K-3 age levels.
I really loved the colorful and vivid pictures throughout the book. The letter we were reading about was in bright bold colors as well so it was easy for my toddler to spot and point out to me. This is not your typical ABC-Book for toddlers as it doesn’t give you the expected words for each letter. This is not an A is for Apple type book. It is also not written from a strict Christian worldview. I wanted to throw that out there because I know this is a deal breaker for some families. That being said, there is nothing blatant or obviously against Christianity either. It does not include anything about evolution or anything controversial in my opinion. I would personally have no problem reading this to my children(which I did) and recommending it. In my opinion, (strictly what I think and not influenced by anyone else) this book would work for any religion.
This book is more about love. You can see the love that this father has for his daughter as he wrote this book for her. You can see that in the lines and the love that shines through. It does include character traits as evidenced by V is for Virtues with the rhyme being about caring, sharing, and honesty. Good life lessons to learn. But most are simple like Y is for Yellow Yacht. That picture especially is bold and bright and eye-catching.
