Reading Eggs Kindergarten Workbook
Reading Eggs Kindergarten Workbook
Homeschool Review Crew
My six year old has been begging me lately to do school on her own and she really wants to learn to read. When we saw that the Reading Eggs Kindergarten Workbook was available as a review this seemed like the perfect fit. Reading Eggs is well known for their online reading and math subscription program but their workbooks are fairly new still. We received a physical copy of their 240 Essential Reading Skills for Kindergarten.
Also included with our review was a 30-day free trial to use the online portion of Reading Eggs. If you’re interested in that for yourself you can grab your 4 free weeks by signing up HERE. We have reviewed their online program before as well as a separate workbook. You can find our reviews linked up at the end of this review.
About the Program
The online subscription program for reading eggs is for ages up to 13. Or children who have trouble with reading can use it past that age, that’s the bonus of homeschooling! The workbooks take this a step further. You get the characters and fun of doing school online but in a book that can be taken anywhere.
It is suggested to use the program whether online or in the workbook for about 15 minutes per day. This is a proven program with many many children seeing success with it. One thing I’d like to note is that this program while based out of New York does sound more British to me. We noted that Mom is instead Mum and the little ant guy has a decided accent. Not that we mind! In fact, my kids love it because that’s where our family is from and hearing the accent my cousins’ sport is always a bit nostalgic and fun!
Inside the reading eggs kindergarten workbook, you can find the table of contents which lets you know all that will be covered. I love these type of pages! They really let me plan out our year and make sure I can have extra little fun things to read and do with the workbook.
Speaking of planning. Next, in the book, you have the whole year planned out for you. Of course, as I’ll mention below we aren’t following this as my daughter has really wanted to speed through the first half of the book.
Within the Reading Eggs Workbooks, you’re going to find all of the same concepts that are taught online. They even have a spot at the end of the lesson that mentions what you would be doing online so if you need more help.
One part of the workbook that I feel is different than online is letter formation. You just can’t pretend to write well on our computer. We have a desktop and a non-touch screen laptop. So it’s very hard to trace and write your own letters on a computer but very good practice in the workbook. You do not need to have an online subscription to use the workbooks. They work together well but also work well separately. These can be used together or separate without missing out on anything.
The flipside of Reading Eggs is Mathseeds designed for ages 3-9. This is also both online and in a new workbook format. We did not review this portion but have reviewed it in the past online and my kids loved it. So make sure you check that out as well.
Our Thoughts
We have been using the Reading Eggs kindergarten workbook and really loving it. My six-year-old was so excited to start her very own school book! She would easily have done the first ten lessons on the first day using the book if I’d not told her we had to stop. Instead, we did all of lesson one on day one!
While her penmanship still needs a lot of work she is grasping the concepts really well! For day two we turned to the online trial and let her do lesson one on there so she got double practice on the letter M.
Each lesson focuses on one letter or concept. There are 60 different lessons. I personally have been letting my daughter do 2-3 lessons per week. She really is gung ho about learning and until I see that she is struggling we’ll keep up the pace we’re at. Right now we are using this 3-4 days per week. She’s doing about one lesson per day. Each lesson is broken up into several different pages.
As I mentioned above she does a lesson in the book on day one, a lesson on the computer for day two over concept from day one, day three is another lesson in the book, and day four is that lesson on the computer. On day five if we’re going to do school she gets to choose if she wants to do some on the computer or the book but most days she chooses both! I think that’s a testament to how much she’s loving her new learning course.
Above you can see the little ant that I was talking about. He has a British accent and is super cute. Other children not needing this program just might be standing around near her so they can see and listen to the ant too. This was still working on letter M for the first lesson.
I can definitely say this is fun. My daughter loves it! She would gladly work on this much more than I let her. I think she’d do a lesson on each computer and book per day if I let her making it really ten lessons per week if you count them separately or five if you count one per book and computer together.
We recommend this program to anyone wanting a fun workbook for learning to read. Reading Eggs kindergarten workbook covers all the skills they need to learn to read. You’ll cover everything that a public school would use for kindergarten as well. The Mathseeds program online or their workbook would be a great compliment for this book.
It slowly builds on itself and has review lessons built-in so that you can be checking that they remember all they have learned. I can see this book being finished within half a year for this little girl of mine just because she is so crazy excited to be learning and loving this curriculum.
In my opinion, this is a good program. It is not necessarily Charlotte Mason like we like to use in our homeschool but I have not found a learn to read program that is that I love. We have tried a lot though! This one is good. The kids love to use it and it works. These are some positives that can’t be ignored.
Would I buy this program?
Yes, I would. In fact, I’m pretty sure we’re going to buy a subscription to the online portion so my daughter can keep using it along with the workbook. And then if she gets done with the workbook as quickly as I think she will we will still have half a year of the online program to finish out her school year with.
